Debated, either from Middle Persian [script needed] (ptwʾsk' /paywāsag/, “purse, wallet”). Akin to Old Armenian պայուսակ (payusak, “purse, pouch”), an Iranian borrowing. Or from Sanskrit पद + अंश (pada + aṃśa, “quarter + part, piece”) via Hindustani پَیسے / पैसे (paise, “money, cash, coin”), akin to Pashto پیسې and Baluchi پیسہ.
