From دَلْو (dalw, bucket) or related دَلَا (dalā, to suspend, to let down in the water) in the sense of a waterwheel; in all other senses presumed semantic loan from Aramaic דָלִיתָא / ܕܳܠܻܝܬ݂ܳܐ (dālīṯā, vine; varicose vein), although the sense of the deltoid muscle appears to be an Arabic figurative development from the idea of an espalier, which disregarded the more traditional medical sense.
