From Middle Persian 𐭤𐭫𐭢𐭥𐭱 (xar-gōš, “rabbit, hare”, literally “big ear”), equivalent to خر (xar) + گوش (gôš). Compare Tajik харгӯш (xargüš), Talysh هووش, هوۊش (havüš), Pashto خرغوږ (xarğwaž), خرغوړ (xarğwaṛ), خرغوګ (xarğwag, “mullein”, literally “big ear”).
