Etymology

From a Proto-Semitic *gVr- (whelp,cub); cognates with Hebrew גּוּר (gúr), Aramaic גורי (gūrē), Phoenician 𐤓‬𐤂 (r‬g‬ /⁠gar⁠/, young of a lion), Akkadian 𒆜 (gerrum, way, path; young one of an animal, from the sense of a traveling companion). Related to the root ج و ر (j w r), meaning “to be a neighbor”, “to be under one's protection”, “to be a client”, “to follow around, to travel close with”, “to be a trainee or deputy”.
