From Proto-Semitic. Compare Hebrew אֳנִיָּה (ʾŏnīyá, “ship”), Aramaic מָאנָא / ܡܳܐܢܳܐ (mānā, “vessel, container; ship”), Ugaritic 𐎀𐎐𐎊𐎚 (ảnyt, “ship”), Akkadian 𒃻𒄘𒈾 (/unūtu, anūtu/, “household, palace; ship; utensils, instruments, tools, wares, gear”) – whence Jewish Babylonian Aramaic אנותא, אנתא (“a type of jar for oil, cruse”) and Old Armenian անօթ (anōtʻ, “container”) –, Ge'ez ንዋይ (nəway, “vessel, utensil, instrument, item; goods, possessions, property, wealth, estate”). It is generally assumed that there has been an accumulation of dissimilations in all these forms.
