Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish پاپاغان (papağan), from Arabic بَبَّغَاء (babbaḡāʔ).[1] Cognate with Lithuanian papūga, Polish papuga.
In Belarusian, displaced by Russian попуга́й (popugáj).
