From Proto-Mordvinic *vajmə ~ *vojmə, from Proto-Uralic *wajŋe (“spirit, soul”). Akin to Moksha вайме (vajme), Estonian vaim (“spirit, soul”), Finnish vaimo (“wife”), Hungarian vágy.
