From *bašla- (“to begin sth.”), from Proto-Turkic *baĺč (“head; beginning”).
Note that postulation of Proto-Turkic *baĺč-la- (“to begin”) is problematic, as no derivatives are attested in Orkhon Turkic, Yakut, Tuva or Tofalar. The Chuvash verb may have formed in contact and by analogy with the Kypchak languages.
Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (bašla-, “to begin”);[1] Uzbek boshlamoq, Uyghur باشلىماق (bashlimaq), Kumyk башламакъ (başlamaq), Azerbaijani başlamaq, Turkish başlamak, Chuvash пуҫла (puśla, “to begin”), etc. See баштау (baştaw) for more cognates.
