Etymology
Learned borrowing from Koine Greek ὕφος (húphos, “weaving, fabric”), from ὑφή (huphḗ, “web”) + -ος (-os, “action noun suffix”). For the "linguistic register" sense, semantic loan from English register; for the "expression" sense, semantic loan from French style.[1]
