Etymology

(vowel): A turned-c as a convenient type for an open o.

(click): A rotated Xhosa dental click c. Later identified as a rotated palatal stop [c], analogous to turned dental t ʇ for dental clicks and turned velar k ʞ for 'velar' clicks.
