From Proto-Vietic *k-taːm, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *kt₁aam (“crab”); cognate with Temiar gantam, Bahnar kơtam, Pacoh atam, Khasi tham, Khmer ក្ដាម (kdaam), Mon ဂတာံ (hətam) and Car Nicobarese ka-tām. Malay ketam is probably a Mon-Khmer loan.
