Dear fellow Wikipedian, Please join us at an event this coming Tuesday: the third Wik-Ed Women editing session will take place on January 20 from 6pm to 10pm at the Los Angeles Contemporary Archive downtown. This series of informal get-togethers is designed to encourage Los Angeles women-in-the-arts (though all are welcome!) to contribute their expertise to Wikipedia, specifically expanding content about women artists. Redondo Loves Wikipedia (2/14), Wik-Ed Women (2/17), and Unforgetting LA at the Getty (2/21)! | |
---|---|
Dear fellow Wikipedian, The LA Wikipedia community has three events in mid-February -- please consider attending! First, we have a Valentine's Day edit-a-thon appropriately named Redondo Loves Wikipedia, which will take place at the Redondo Beach Public Library from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, February 14. Join library staff, the Redondo Beach Historical Society, and others to help improve Wikipedia's coverage of Redondo Beach! Second, we have a Wik-Ed Women editing session on Tuesday, February 17 from 6pm to 10pm at the Los Angeles Contemporary Archive downtown. This series of informal get-togethers is designed to encourage Los Angeles women-in-the-arts (though all are welcome!) to contribute their expertise to Wikipedia, specifically expanding content about women artists. Third, we have an Unforgetting LA event put on by East of Borneo in collaboration with the Getty Research Institute. Come help improve Wikipedia's coverage of LA design and architecture, and have an awesome free day at the museum -- parking will be validated for edit-a-thon participants! If you'd like to use particular books from GRI's great collection, be sure to email before 2/13 (instructions at event page). And be sure to check out our main meetup page, because we already have three SoCal events scheduled for early March! I hope to see you there! Have you heard of the Kaffeeklatsch? It is a test area for women to hear and support each other. The idea came about as a result of a discussion at meta regarding my IdeaLab proposal (yet open) for WikiProject Women.
Now that the klatsch has survived an MfD and WMF legal has said that it does not violate the non discrimination policy, I am looking for women editors who might like to join.
Although I have started a couple of discussions, they are not urgent. For now, the "Please introduce yourself" discussion is more important! I want to take it slow at first and build a small group before trying to address heavy topics or come up with big goals. For now, the klatsch is there as a sort of refuge. I hope you will consider joining, and invite other women editors, too, if you wish. Lightbreather (talk) 23:00, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
How to pick up more women... | |
Hello! Victuallers and I have developed a proposal for a talk to be presented at Wikimania 2015. It's titled, How to pick up more women -- as in more women editors and more women's biographies. Examples include the Edit-a-thon blitz during WikiWomen's History Month and the "new articles" work underway by WikiProject Women Writers. The Wikimania talk proposal review process has begun and there's no guarantee that this proposal will be accepted. That's where you come in. Please review our proposal and give us feedback. Ultimately, we hope you add your name to the signup at the bottom of the proposal which signifies you're interested in the talk (it does not signify you'll be attending the event). Thank you! On 7 March 2015, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Sinah Estelle Kelley, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Sinah Estelle Kelley helped mass-produce penicillin for the U. S. Department of Agriculture following the Second World War? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Sinah Estelle Kelley. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

women's history, broadly defined
Thank you, Penny, writing on a scientific basis in women's studies and disability history, for quality articles such as Sinah Estelle Kelley and 40 Families Project, adding to our knowledge about women's history, for project maintenance as an active member, for not defining women's history narrowly, - you are an awesome Wikipedian!

Penny, I just approved this article through AFC, but I really doubt the notability of this person given that almost all of the sources are primary sources. I thought you might be interested in the article (women's history, disability history) and could help clean it up if possible? I may end up nominating it for deletion if it doesn't get improved. Thanks! Calliopejen1 (talk) 18:02, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
Hi Penny, I have just discovered your blog where you discussed contributing to WikiProject Disability, that got me thinking about how we can promote the WikiProject and its goals to people who are not currently involved. The next thought that came up was "edit-a-thon!" such as those held for women's history. As you're probably aware, the disability project has become rather quiet lately, sometimes I feel entirely alone there. Do you think an edit-a-thon is a viable way to kick-start some movement in the project? I'm thinking such an edit-a-thon could be a good fit for Disability Studies departments at universities (or even just one university at first). I have an idea for a theme for such an edit-a-thon, but first I'd like your thoughts on the viability of the idea. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 09:48, 17 May 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
