Mujibur Rahman (Bengali: মজিবুর রহমান) is a former Bangladeshi military officer who was the longest serving director general of the Special Security Force. Prior to his dismissal on 11 September 2024, he served as general officer commanding of Army Training and Doctrine Command.[2][3][4] Before that, he was Quartermaster general at Army Headquarters.[5] He came to the limelight in 2016, as the Operational Commander who carried out Operation Thunderbolt during the Holey Artisan Attack.[6]

He is also the recipient of Bangla Academy Literary Award 2023.[7]

Early life

Mujibur Rahman was born on 16 June 1968 in Narsingdi District. His father, AKM Bazlur Rahman was a valiant freedom fighter, devoted language movement activist, close companion of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and recipient of Independence Award.[8]

Mujibur Rahman was commissioned in the 18th long course of the Bangladesh Military Academy in the Infantry corps on 24 June 1988. He graduated from the Defence Services Command and Staff College and The Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, Tamil Nadu, India. He graduated from the National University, Bangladesh. He completed his master's degree in Defence and Strategic Studies from the University of Madras in India besides he completed Mid Carrier Course in Pakistan. He Completed his NDC course from National Defence College, India. He taught at the School of Infantry and Tactics. He took the role as instructor of weapon and tactical wing. He served as chief instructor of tactical wing in School of Infantry and Tactics and Directing Staff in prestigious Defence Services Command and Staff College, Mirpur.[8]

Mujibur Rahman has served under the blue helmet as contingent member in United Nations Mission in Somalia and Congo.[8]

Mujibur Rahman served as the General Staff Officer of Military Intelligence Directorate and Directorate General of Forces Intelligence.He served as the Additional Director General of Border Guard Bangladesh. He was the Additional Director General of Operations of the Rapid Action Battalion. As Head of Operations, he led a team of 150 RAB officers, receiving air support from a helicopter, in an offensive against an Sundarban criminal gang, resulting in 5 dead.[9] He served as the Commander, 46th Independent Infantry Brigade. As Operational Commander of 1st Para-Commando Battalion as Brig Gen, Rahman led Operation Thunderbolt during the Holey Artisan attack.[8]

The rescue operation was ordered by the Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and was named Operation Thunderbolt. The operation was led by 1st Para-Commando Battalion under the leadership of Operational Commander Brig Gen Mujibur Rahman. Nearly 12 hours after the attack, the operation was declared over by Mujibur Rahman. The operation ended with rescue of 13 hostages and 5 terrorists were killed while the 6th one was captured alive.[10][11][12][13]

Promotion and Conclusion of Security Force Career

On 31 July 2018, he was promoted to Major General. He took over the command of SSF on 6 August 2018. Since then he resides at the Ganabhaban along with the Prime Minister and has been accompanying her on her events and foreign visits.[14] He was sacked after the fall of the Awami League government the resignation of Sheikh Hasina.[15]

Personal life

He is married to Mrs Tasrin Mujib. The couple has two sons and one daughter.[16]

Controversy

Lt Gen Md Mujibur Rahman[17] has been a controversial figure since the fall of dictator Sheikh Hasina.[18][19][20] According to reports by Sky News,[21] Bangladesh's military intelligence established more than 800 torture camps known as Ayana Ghar when Mujibur Rahman was the director of Bangladesh's military intelligence, the DGFI.[22][23] General Mujibur Rahman was involved in the disappearances and torture of thousands of civilians in Ayana Ghar.[24][25][26] According to Bangladesh's anti-corruption commission, General Mujibur Rahman siphoned more than $2 million to New York to purchase two luxury apartments.[27]
