Active Italian Army brigade logistics unit From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Logistic Regiment "Sassari" (Italian: Reggimento Logistico "Sassari") is a military logistics regiment of the Italian Army based in Cagliari in Sardinia. The regiment is the logistic unit of the Mechanized Brigade "Sassari" and was declared operational on 1 November 2019.[2] The regiment has been assigned the flag of the Logistic Battalion "Cremona", which was stationed in Sardinia during the World War II.[3][4][5] The regimental anniversary falls, as for all units of the Transport and Materiel Corps, on 22 May, the anniversary of the Italian Army's first major automobile use to transport reinforcements to counter the Austro-Hungarian Offensive at Asiago in 1916.[6]

The Logistic Regiment "Sassari" provides logistic autonomy through projectable and close-support logistics to the Mechanized Brigade "Sassari".[2]
The establishment of a logistic unit for the Sassari brigade was advocated for by several Sardinian politicians and the raising of the unit began in March 2019.[7] In June 2019, the Parliament authorized the establishment of the logistic regiment.[8][9]
The regiment was declared operational on 1 November 2019 and received the flag of the Logistic Battalion "Cremona".[2] On 29 November 2019 the regiment's troops took their oath in front of the newly arrived the flag.[5]
The Logistic Battalion "Cremona" is the spiritual successor of the logistic units of the 44th Infantry Division "Cremona", which in World War II had been deployed in Sardinia since March 1941. In 1943 the division fought against German forces in Corsica and then joined the Italian Co-belligerent Army. Reorganized as Combat Group "Cremona" the group fought on the allied side in the Italian campaign and liberated Venice on 30 April 1945.[10] The Cremona division pushed the Germans North from Zonza and Quenza to the Golo river and Sorbo-Ocagnano.[11]
After World War II the combat group was renamed Infantry Division "Cremona" and based in the city of Turin. As part of the 1975 army reform the Infantry Division "Cremona" was reduced to Motorized Brigade "Cremona" and on 30 October 1975 the division's services grouping command was reduced to Logistic Battalion "Cremona", which received all the traditions of the preceding logistic, transport, medical, maintenance, and supply units of the Cremona units.[11]
On 5 November 1996 the Logistic Battalion "Cremona" was disbanded and on 13 November 1996 the battalion's flag was transferred to the Shrine of the Flags in the Vittoriano in Rome, where it remained until 28 October 2019.[11]
Like all Italian Army brigade logistic units the Logistic Regiment "Sassari" is organized as follows:[12]
