List of vice presidents of the United States who ran for president

Nineteen of the 49 vice presidents of the United States have attempted a run for the presidency after being elected vice president.^[1] Six have been elected to the presidency, or almost a third of running vice-presidents, while seven have lost the presidential election, and one (Mike Pence) has dropped out. Eleven have earned the primary nomination in their party, with most of them winning the presidency. Seven unsuccessfully sought the presidential nomination of their party. Additionally, fourteen vice presidents ran while they were in office.

The list excludes the nine vice presidents who ascended to the presidency due to a vacancy, and then sought an additional full term for president.^[a]

1. These vice presidents include John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, Chester A. Arthur, Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry S. Truman, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Gerald Ford.
2. Election occurred prior to the Twelfth Amendment to the United States Constitution which formalized the process for electing the president and vice president. Prior to the Twelfth Amendment, the vice president was the runner-up in the presidential election.
3. Was a member of the Democratic Party while serving as Vice President of the United States, but ran for president under the short lived Progressive Party that he co-founded.
4. Humphrey initially expected to remain as Johnson's running mate for reelection until Johnson withdrew from the race on March 31, 1968.
5. Won the popular vote, but lost the presidency through the Electoral College.
6. Harris initially expected to remain as Biden's running mate for reelection until Biden withdrew from the race on July 21, 2024.
