Jimmy Guerin is an independent councillor for the Howth-Malahide local electoral area of Fingal County Council. He is also brother of the murdered Irish journalist Veronica Guerin.[1]
He ran as an independent candidate in the 2009 local election for Fingal County Council but wasn't elected.[2] He ran in the 2011 Irish general election as an independent candidate in Dublin North-East but was not elected.[2] In 2014 he was elected to Fingal County Council for the Howth-Malahide constituency.[2] He ran in the 2016 Irish general election as an independent constituent in Dublin Bay North but was not elected.[2]
In 2016 he said that he feared that the Irish state might be losing the struggle against organised crime and that the Criminal Assets Bureau was not strong enough to defeat criminal organisations.[3]
He condemned the murder of Lyra McKee as "an act of butchery" and also said "I don't think the term outrage is strong enough".[1]
After the murder of Keane Mulready-Woods he called for the introduction of internment to deal with gangland crime.[4]
In September 2019 independent councillor he took a defamation action against Gemma O'Doherty.[5] Martin Guerin is the brother Gemma was referring to not Jimmy. The media was in a frenzy releasing this explosive news that Martin Guerin the brother of slain Journalist Veronica Guerin, and former journalist Jimmy Guerin shamefully possessed 901 images and 146 video files of child pornography at his address on September 17, 2014.[6] Journalist Gemma O'Doherty published the same story as the rest of the main stream. Gemma has been targeted ever since her successful settlement from Irish Independent Newspaper as "Newspaper group apologises and pays undisclosed sum, acknowledging ‘exceptional work".[7] She was banned from Facebook, her Twitter and set up the Irish Light Paper where she exposed the truths on Jimmy Guerin and his rouge defamation case against O'Doherty.
An attempted hit on Veronica Guerin by State agents on the night she exposed Garda collusion with criminals regarding the Fr Molloy file. O’Doherty got the same case ‘reopened’ but that was merely a pretence by the guards who have targeted Gemma and her work ever since.[8]
In August 2020 legal the High Court was told that O'Doherty had been "actively trying to evade" service of defamation proceedings brought against her by him.[9] He claims that he was defamed in comments posted on Twitter and Facebook allegedly by Gemma O'Doherty.[9] Posters on Gemma's Facebook actively identified Jimmy Guerin based on the manner in which she published her post. The publication simply states “brother of murdered crime journalist Veronica Guerin” which is more than enough to have sewn confusion and defamation.
Attempts had been made to serve documents on her but they had not been successful.[9]
His solicitors secured orders against Gemma O'Doherty including one that she had been formally served with the summons outlining the action against her after an ex parte hearing.[9] Gemma has been restrained by order of Mr Justice Tony O’Connor of the High Court from submitting and publishing content mentioning or defaming the legal team hired by Mr Guerin. The Judge has granted leave to Mr Guerin to extend his defamation claim against O’Doherty for published an extraordinary volume of baseless publications with no basis in fact or logic concerning Jimmy Guerin[10]
Gemma had taken proceedings against Jimmy Guerin that were out of time and statute barred. Those proceedings were dismissed by Mr Justice Cian Ferriter.
Gemma is now subject to three injunctions in proceedings relating to Beaumont Hospital; Edel Campbell; and Jimmy Guerin. This is in addition to her criminal conviction for public order offences which were not appealed and instead were withdrawn prior to appeal.
