List of Manchester Cricket Club players

This is a complete list in alphabetical order of cricketers who played first-class cricket matches for Manchester Cricket Club. Manchester played a total of 13 matches between 1844 and 1858 which have been retrospectively classified as first-class.^[1][2] The club is first recorded in matches from 1822.

The club is a fore-runner of Lancashire County Cricket Club which was formed in 1865. A team with the Lancashire name played four first-class matches, all against Yorkshire sides, between 1849 and 1851.^{[lower-alpha 1]} Players who played in these matches only are not included in the list below.^{[lower-alpha 2]}

Many players represented other teams besides Manchester.^[3]

Richard Bellhouse	1846–1858	Eight of his 15 first-class matches were for Manchester. Bellhouse also played in three of the Lancashire matches against Yorkshire between 1849 and 1851. Brother of Thomas Bellhouse.	[9]
Thomas Bellhouse	1846–1854	All five of his first-class matches were for Manchester. In four of them he played alongside his brother Richard.	[10]

Scholes Birch	1845–1852	Played three matches for the side as well as in three of the Lancashire–Yorkshire matches between 1849 and 1851. Son of Lea Birch.	[12]
Joseph Birley	1852	Birley's only first-class match was for Manchester.	[13]
Thomas Blain	1852	Played twice for Manchester, having played one first-class match for a Lancashire side the previous year.	[14]
David Bleakley	1852–1854	Played twice for Manchester and made three first-class appearances for the Gentlemen of the North.	[15]
C. Bradshaw	1844–1848	Played in a total of seven first-class matches, five of which were for Manchester and two for Lancashire in 1849. Other than a surname and initial no biographical details are known.	[16]
Henry Brandt	1854	Brandt's only first-class match was for the club.	[17]
Stephen Braybrooke	1844–1845	Both of his first-class matches were for Manchester	[18]
John Buttery	1852	Buttery played twice for Manchester, having played in both of the Lancashire matches in 1849. Buttery was employed as a professional at the club from 1847 to 1852. Previously he had played for Nottingham and Nottinghamshire sides.	[19][20]

Alexander Rowley	1854–1858	Played in 31 first-class matches, three of which were Manchester, making his first-class debut for the side at the age of 16. Played for Lancashire after the formation of the county club. He was influential in the formation of Lancashire as a county club in 1864 and was its chairman from 1869 to 1877 and President between 1874 and 1880. Brother of James Rowley.	[56][57]
James Rowley	1852–1854	Two of his five first-class matches were for Manchester and he also played in both of Lancashire's 1851 fixtures. Brother of Alexander Rowley.	[58]

Edward Wright	1844–1848	Six of Wright's seven first-class matches were for Manchester. He also appeared in one of Lancashire's 1849 fixtures. Other than his name there are no biographical details known.	[68]
Henry Wright	1857–1858	Played primarily for Yorkshire and Sheffield sides as well as for teams such as the North and various All England XIs. Made two appearances for Manchester sides, one against Surrey and the other against Sussex.	[69]

Notes

1. During the same period Manchester, which was the dominant side in Lancashire, played matches against Sheffield Cricket Club, the dominant side in Yorkshire. Early matches between the two county sides were largely organised by the respective club sides.
2. Players who only played for Lancashire sides were generally from other parts of the county and so did not play for distinct Manchester sides in any matches.
3. There is some doubt about whether or not there were two Edward Martin's playing cricket during the 1840s and 1850s. It is possible that a different player appeared in the matches for Manchester, all of which occurred during one season.^[45]
