Islamia University began as Jamia Abbasia, a religious university established in Bahawalpur in 1925 following the academic pursuits of Al-Azhar University in Egypt. In 1975, Jamia Abbasia was declared a general university and renamed as The Islamia University of Bahawalpur.[3]
The university started at the Abbasia and Khawaja Fareed campuses with ten departments. Later, 1280 acres of land was allotted to the university on Hasilpur Road about eight kilometers away from the city center which became the Baghdad-ul-Jadeed campus. It consists of 126 teaching departments offering 300 disciples.[4] In 2015, it was ranked 11th in the general (large) category of universities.[5]
The Islamia University Bahawalpur has currently fifteen functional faculties [6] which are listed as,
Islamia University added two more campuses in 2005: One covering eastern side of Bahawalpur Division (in Bahawalnagar; known as IUB Bahawalnagar Campus) and the other one to cover western side of Bahawalpur Division (in Rahim Yar Khan; known as IUB - Rahim Yar Khan Campus or IUB - RYK Campus).
On 24 July 2023, the Chief Security Officer of Islamia University was arrested by police at a checkpoint as he was actively attempting to flee. A search of his vehicle led to the discovery of various drugs and medicines commonly used for sexual pleasure.[7] The police also discovered more than 5500 obscene videos and pictures of women, many of which were of university staff members and students.[8] A 5-member body to investigate the scandal was formed by The Higher Education Commission (HEC) on 28 July 2023.[9] Punjab interim Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi also formed a 3-member inquiry committee to investigate the sale of drugs in the university.[10]
