Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet's environment has shown itself to be mainly inhospitable to dinosaurs. The ones that are left live in remote equatorial regions with conditions similar to those in which they were formerly abundant. Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson), a skilled expert in clandestine operations, is hired to work with paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) and team leader Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali) on a top-secret mission to obtain genetic material from the three largest creatures in the world's tropical biosphere. This genetic material contains the key to a drug that will miraculously save human lives. Zora's operation crosses paths with a civilian family whose boating adventure was overturned by roving aquatic dinosaurs, leaving them all stranded on an island where they must confront a terrifying, ominous revelation that has been kept secret from the world for decades.[1][2]
In late January 2024, it was reported that a new Jurassic World film was in development by Universal Pictures, with David Koepp writing the screenplay, as he had done on Jurassic Park (1993) and its sequel The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997).[4][5] Director and writer Colin Trevorrow, who spent nine years working on the Jurassic World trilogy stated previously that he would likely not return for another film, except in a possible advisory role.[6][7] Like the previous Jurassic World films, the new installment would be produced by Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley through The Kennedy/Marshall Company, while Steven Spielberg would return as executive producer through Amblin Entertainment.[4][8] The film will be a completely new take. The actors from the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World trilogies, namely Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum, are not expected to return.[4][9]
Development of the project had been underway for some time,[4][10] with several drafts already written by Koepp.[8] The producers had also done some pre-production work, including dinosaur designs, meaning that any creative input from the eventual director would be minimal.[8][11] The position was reportedly described as being "more shooter than auteur", as the producers seek to have more creative control than Dominion,[8] which earned mostly negative reviews.[12] With Rebirth, Spielberg and Koepp wanted to return the series to the tone of the Jurassic Park trilogy, particularly the first film. Aside from the inclusion of dinosaurs, Koepp had no story requirements to follow, although he did compile a list of rules for himself; among these was that the film be based on accurate science and that it not retcon any events from the previous films.[13] Paleontologist Stephen Brusatte returns from Dominion as a dinosaur consultant.[14]
David Leitch was briefly in talks to direct the film during early February 2024,[15] but negotiations broke down after several days,[16] as the project's progress up to that point left little room for his creative input.[8][17] Gareth Edwards was announced as director later that month.[18] Spielberg enjoyed Edwards' Godzilla (2014) and Edwards is a fan of the original Jurassic Park.[12][19] Edwards had planned to take a break from studio filmmaking and was busy writing a new film when he was offered the Jurassic World project, which he described as "the only movie that would make me drop everything like a stone and dive right in".[18]
Casting was underway in March 2024, and continued over the next three months. Scarlett Johansson,[20] Jonathan Bailey,[21] Manuel Garcia-Rulfo,[22] Rupert Friend,[23] Mahershala Ali,[24] Luna Blaise,[25] David Iacono,[26] Audrina Miranda,[27] and Béchir Sylvain eventually joined the project.[28] Johansson is a fan of the franchise and had wanted to join it for more than a decade.[29] Jennifer Lawrence had been in consideration for the role that ultimately went to Johansson.[30] Glen Powell, who voiced Dave in the animated series Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous (2020–2022), turned down a role.[31]
Principal photography began in Thailand on June 13, 2024 under the working title Saga[32][33] with filming lasting a month in the country.[34][35] On-set locations include Khao Phanom Bencha National Park in Krabi,[36] Ko Kradan at Hat Chao Mai National Park in Trang, and Ao Phang Nga National Park in Phang Nga.[37] Filming then moved to the Malta Film Studios in Kalkara, Malta in July 2024.[38] Some stunts were filmed in a tank, and ocean footage was shot on the nearby Mediterranean Sea, the latter was described by Edwards as a "very difficult" experience.[2] In August 2024,[39] filming moved to London and Sky Studios Elstree in the United Kingdom,[40][41][42] before wrapping on September 27, 2024.[43] Some reshoots were made in New York City in October.[44] John Mathieson serves as the cinematographer.[45]
Jurassic World Rebirth is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 2, 2025.[15][4]
