Etelä-Suomen Sanomat (meaning South Finland News in English; nickname Etlari) is a Finnish daily newspaper published in Lahti, Finland. It is the leading paper in its metropolitan area.[1][2]

Etelä-Suomen Sanomat began publishing in 1914.[3][4] The paper originated from the prior Lahden Lehti (1900–1909) and Lahden Sanomat (1909–1914) newspapers.[3][5] The paper has a liberal editorial stance.[4]
Etelä-Suomen Sanomat was provincial newspaper, which for a long time had a traditional orientation, but became more cosmopolitan and modern under Heikki Hakala, editor-in-chief from 1997 to 2014. Since than it cooperates closely with the regional papers Keskisuomalainen, Savon Sanomat and Karjalainen. Their collaboration also extends to sharing articles and entire pages. The paper switched to tabloid format in 2016.[6]
In autumn 2016 Keskisuomalainen took over the majority stake in Etelä-Suomen Sanomat publishing company ESA.[6]
The circulation of Etelä-Suomen Sanomat began to grow during the 1940s.[4] Its circulation was 67,185 copies in 2001.[7] The 2004 circulation of the paper was 62,155 copies.[8] The same year the paper had a readership of 145,000.[8] The paper had a circulation of 60,889 copies.[9] In 2007 the circulation of the paper was 61,003 copies.[10]
In 2009 its circulation was 60,420 copies.[11] Its circulation was 56,616 copies in 2011.[12] The circulation of the paper was 51,537 copies in 2013.[13]
