District Council of Swan Reach

The District Council of Swan Reach (formerly District Council of Blanchetown) was a local government area in the Murraylands of South Australia from 1888 to 1933.

History

The council was established in January 1888 by promulgation of the District Councils Act 1887. It occupied the hundreds of Skurray, Fisher, Nildottie and Paisley.^[1]

In 1898 the newly-gazetted hundreds of Murbko and Bakara (in the County of Albert) were added to the district.^[2][3]

In 1920 the council name was changed to 'Swan Reach'.

In September 1933 the District Council of Keyneton amalgamated with Swan Reach to become new District Council of Keyneton and Swan Reach (later called Sedan).

NEW HUNDREDS.—One of the last official acts of the Downer Ministry was to constitute another batch of new hundreds, which will go considerably towards more clearly locating geographical features in the Central District of the colony. The new hundreds have been named as follows:—In the County of Albert—Hundreds of Murbko, Waikerie, Holder, Moorook, Bakara, and Montung; In the County of Alfred—Hundreds of Pyap, Bookpurnong, Gordon, Paringa, and Murtho. Most of the hundreds have as a portion of their boundaries the banks of the River Murray, and they have all been added to the Central Land District.
