Brahma Prakash is an Indian cultural theorist, writer and academician who teaches theatre and performance studies at the School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India. He writes on art, culture and politics.[1][2] He works on theatre and performance theories, rites, rituals and festivals, oral histories and narrative traditions, political performances, and cultural enactments.[3][4] His writings are known for evoking powerful lyrical, poetic prose style essays drawing from multiples sources including personal narratives, folk and literary and performance theories.[5] [6] Critics find his writings "lyrical and searing".[7]

Education

Brahma Prakash completed his bachelor's in Chinese Language from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi in 2004. While studying M.A. in Arts and Aesthetics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, in 2005 he decided to join M.A. in Chinese Aesthetics and Philosophy at National Central University, Taiwan which he completed in 2008. He completed his Ph.D. in Theatre and Performance Studies from Royal Holloway, University of London in 2014.[1]

In his work, "Body on the Barricades Life, Art and Resistance in Contemporary India." Brahma Prakash explores the profound connection between art and resistance.[19] He views art as a powerful medium for expressing dissent and challenging oppressive systems. Through his analysis of various forms of cultural and political resistance, Prakash highlighted how art serves as a means for marginalized communities to establish their identities, voice their struggles, and resist authoritarian forces.[20] His insights emphasize the transformative potential of art in fostering social justice and creating spaces for resistance and solidarity.[21][22]

The Epical subalterns

Brahma Prakash uses the term "Epical Subalterns" in his work titled "The Epical Subalterns: Imagining the ‘Impossible’ in India and South Asia." to describe the imaginative and performative practices of subaltern communities in India. These communities create epics and narratives that reflect their moral conquests over oppressive values, playing vital roles in their everyday struggles and resistance against injustices.[23]
