Estonian Figure Skating Championships
Recurring national figure skating competition From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Estonian Figure Skating Championships (Estonian: Eesti Meistrivõistlused) are an annual figure skating competition organized by the Estonian Skating Union to crown the national champions of Estonia.[1] The first Estonian Championships were held in 1917 in Tallinn and consisted of men's singles, women's singles, and pair skating. Ice dance was added as an event in 1948. There were numerous interruptions to the championships during the Soviet occupation of Estonia.

Medals are awarded in men's singles, women's singles, pair skating, and ice dance at the senior, junior, and novice levels, although not every discipline is held every year due to a lack of participants.
Alfred Hirv currently holds the record for winning the most Estonian championships in men's singles (with ten),[2] while Vaike Paduri holds the record in women's singles (with fourteen).[3] Eduard Hiiop holds the record in pair skating (with ten, although these were not all won while competing with the same partner).[4] Nikolai Salnikov holds the record in ice dance (with eight, and also not won while competing with the same partner).[5]
The Estonian Championships were first held in Tallinn in 1917.[6] Johannes Johanson won the inaugural men's event,[6] Hilda Laane won the inaugural women's event,[7] and Johanson and Laane won the inaugural pairs event.[8] Until World War II, figure skating was overseen by the Estonian Winter Sports Union.[9] During the Soviet annexation and occupation of Estonia (1940–91), some Estonians also competed in the Soviet Figure Skating Championships.[3][10] In 1991, after Estonia declared its independence from the Soviet Union, the Estonian Skating Union was founded and admitted as a member of the International Skating Union.[9]
In recent years, Estonia's presence in international figure skating has been greatly elevated, due in part to Estonia hosting several high-profile events, including the 2020 World Junior Figure Skating Championships,[11] the 2022 World Junior Figure Skating Championships,[12] the 2022 European Figure Skating Championships,[13] the 2022 Four Continents Figure Skating Championships,[14] and the 2025 European Figure Skating Championships.[15][16]

Perspective
The reigning Estonian figure skating champions: Mihhail Selevko (men's singles); Niina Petrõkina (women's singles); and Solène Mazingue and Marko Jevgeni Gaidajenko (ice dance)
Men's singles
Since 2019, Aleksandr Selevko has won the men's championship event three times (2020–22), while his brother Mihhail has won the event four times (2019, 2023–25). Their friendly competitiveness has elevated the quality and status of figure skating in Estonia over the past several years.[17] In 2023, Mihhail Selevko stated that "Estonian figure skating has made significant progress in the past few seasons, which is great to witness."[18]
