The Écoles gratuites dedessin (French for free drawing schools) were several art schools founded in eighteenth-century France, notably the École Royale
critic. He studied under Gustave Chassevent at the ÉcoledeDessin and then Isidore Pils at the École des Beaux-Arts. Merson had his first work exhibited
design (écolededessin industriel) of Mulhouse, then in Paris with Henner and with Léon Bonnat. He started exhibiting paintings at the Salon de Paris in
