When you update a page with translations on wikis with the Translate extension the existing translations will be marked as outdated instead of removed.
The new version of MediaWiki was released to all wikis last week (calendar).
MoodBar has been removed from the Wikimedia wikis.
The live option for the Tipsy notice tool has been removed. Gadgets and user scripts which use it need to be updated.
Problems
Editors who use Firefox 50 might get logged out or fail to save their edits. This is because of a browser bug. Until this is fixed you can enter about:config in the address bar and set network.cookie.maxPerHost to 5000. Firefox 50 is the current version of the Firefox.

I'm just going to say this unusual thing, because I've never said it to an editor before, but please never ask me for any assistance for anything on this site, ever, because you will not receive it. I resent being stonewalled by any experienced editor to provide answers to reasonable simple questions that I pose. I'm sorry about the comma errors. I have been trying to fix this grammar problem of mine. Maybe I should not put in commas at all until further notice. I have used the edit summary box but the editors don't always seem to understand why I make the edits I do. If I recorded every single edit summary for edits I have done I would have almost no time to do anything else. As a volunteer working on articles I many times wonder if it is worth taking the time to do this at all. I know many many people who have quit doing Wikipedia because it takes so much time out their schedule. They have felt unappreciated and have gotten very little thanks for when they know they have done good work that benefits Wiki. Also, they have received more bad remarks and criticism with little help on fixing their edit mistakes. Many times the speedy deletions of their long hours of tireless efforts have been wiped out by what has possibly been perceived as arrogant, close-minded know-it-alls and feel like children who having been slapped on the wrists. I’ve seen that teamwork seems to be lacking and many editors do not allow others to help improve on articles as if the article is perfect and should never be allowed to be touched again. This seems to be quite unfair and exclusive. Many times deletions by Wiki authorities I believe are no more than differences in style taste and opinion. All the Wiki contributions and I do are in good faith for the betterment of Wikipedia articles and the people who use them to get valuable accesble instant information. I love working on Wiki and want to show a positive image for others to see but I feel very tired of fighting what seems to be an uphill battle. I have recently been informed by Wikipedia that i have done over 10,000 edits. I hope this counts for something. I'm not trying to cause trouble. I hope it doesn't sound like I'm complaining I am trying not to. I hope you understand how I feel and where I’m coming from. @Chitt66: I understand and empathize with many of the feelings you have regarding work in the Wikipedia. It can feel thankless and maddening at times, but what I think keeps people here is their dedication to free knowledge for all, especially about topics of interest to them. But I will say that providing edit summaries for complicated edits is necessary, because not doing so is disruptive to other editors. It doesn't help with teamwork to make other editors try to read your mind. It is very frustrating going through edits, guessing as to why a number of them were done. Also, I disagree with any notion that writing edit summaries takes too much time, as for me it takes usually very little time, and I have a track record of doing it for almost all my 114,000+ edits. I don't ask editors to do what I won't do myself. If people can't properly edit on the Wikipedia due to their lack of time (whatever contributes to that), that is just the way it is. video2commons was down for two weeks. This was because of a problem with Commons video transcoders. It is now back up.
Changes this week
There is a new magic word called {{PAGELANGUAGE}}. It returns the language of the page you are at. This can be used on wikis with more than one language to make it easier for translators.
When an admin blocks a user or deletes or protects a page they give a reason why. They can now get suggestions when they write. The suggestions will be based on the messages in the dropdown menu.
You will be able to use <chem> to write chemical formulas. Before you could use <ce>. <ce> should be replaced by <chem>.
The "Columns" and "Rows" settings will be removed from the Editing tab in Preferences. If you wish to keep what the "Rows" setting did you can add this code to your personal CSS: #wpTextbox1 { height: 50em; } You can change the number 50 to make it look like you want to.
Sometimes edits in MediaWiki by mistake are shown coming from private IP addresses such as 127.0.0.1. Edits and other contributions logged to these IP addresses will be blocked and shown the reason from MediaWiki:Softblockrangesreason. This should not affect most users. Bots and other tools running on Wikimedia Labs, including Tool Labs will receive a "blocked" error if they try to edit without being logged in.
When you edit with the visual editor categories will be on the top of the page options menu.

Hi - honestly, the GE article looks great and I don't see the need for a refimprove tag. But since you do could you possibly add ref improve tags to the sections you think need work? The article is very large and I would say most sections pass verifiability, however I do see sections that need work. I think it would be best to tagg (or add CN tags) to the areas in question instead of a blanket tag. What do you think? Garchy (talk) 15:28, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
I don't agree for the simple reason that we shouldn't be pretending that the article "looks great" in this respect. However, if you prefer the article be filled with section-based versions, I will oblige because either way, the work needs to be done eventually. I should explain - I don't think the article looks "great" in terms of GA status or the like - but in comparison to where it was in 2015. I think ref improve tags by section (and using "citation needed" tags) would be better off as they will confront each issue directly instead of a blanket tag. The list is not comprehensive because it changes almost weekly. We license the private colleges in Kentucky. There are many more than listed, and because licenses expire or are revoked, there is no static list. I can provide a link to a page that we keep up-to-date. OR you can change the private listing to the Association for Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities and list those schools only (http://www.aikcu.org/) and note there are others outside the association. I'll leave it to you to decide. Just noticed that this list is an incorrect representation.

Changes this week
ElectronPdfService will be enabled by default on Meta and German Wikipedia. This is a new way to get articles as PDF files you can download. It will come to more wikis later.
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from January 31. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from February 1. It will be on all wikis from February 2 (calendar).
Future changes
The Community Tech team will develop more tools to handle harassment of Wikimedia editors. The goal is to give the communities better tools to find, report and evaluate harassment. They will also work on more effective blocking tools.
The Wikimedia technical community is doing a Developer Wishlist survey. Developers can propose ideas before 31 January 23:59 UTC. This is soon.
We now have 804 New Page Reviewers!
Most of us requested the user right at PERM, expressing a wish to be able to do something about the huge backlog, but the chart on the right does not demonstrate any changes to the pre-user-right levels of October.
Hitting 17,000 soon
The backlog is still steadily growing at a rate of 150 a day or 4,650 a month. Only 20 reviews a day by each reviewer over the next few days would bring the backlog down to a managable level and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
It didn't work in time to relax for the Xmas/New Year holidays. Let's see if we can achieve our goal before Easter, otherwise by Thanksgiving it will be closer to 70,000.
Second set of eyes
Remember that we are the only guardians of quality of new articles, we alone have to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged by non-Reviewer patrollers and that new authors are not being bitten.
Abuse
This is even more important and extra vigilance is required considering Orangemoody, and

Coordinator election
Kudpung is stepping down after 6 years as unofficial coordinator of New Page Patrolling/Reviewing. There is enough work for two people and two coords are now required. Details are at NPR Coordinators; nominate someone or nominate yourself. Date for the actual suffrage will be published later.

Problems
The block log sometimes showed blocks as being much longer than they were. This has now been fixed.
Changes this week
Wikimedia pages will now be better at showing pictures when you share them on social media. The descriptions will be different too. You can see an example of before and after.
There are some changes to the OOjs UI. Some old functions will not work anymore or not work as they used to. This could be a breaking change.

Future changes
Tidy will be replaced later this year. Instead, the HTML 5 parsing algorithm will be used to clean up bad HTML in wikitext. This will cause problems on a number of wikis. They need to be fixed first. Hi Stevietheman, this is about File:JamesGuthrieMonumentPlaque.jpg you uploaded on 17 June 2007 to en:wp and which was later transfered to Wikimedia Commons. You added following note to the description: “Photo taken by Bryan S. Bush and given to me to place on Wikipedia under a free license”. In 2007 we had already established procedures to verify and document such permissions through our support team. Could you please contact Bryan S. Hi Stevietheman, thanks for responding. Would more time be helpful to you? I do not know how this is handled at en:wp for the photos which have not yet been transfered to Commons. But at Commons we could wait several weeks to settle this, if you are interested in getting this done. In principle, these images can also be restored after a deletion when a permission is received. Recent changes
EventStreams is a new way to show activity on Wikimedia wikis. For now it works with the recent changes feed. It will do more things later. It will replace RCStream. Tools that use RCStream should move to EventStreams before 7 July.
Problems
The Firefox add-onFirefogg can cause problems with the Upload Wizard. This will not be fixed, because Firefox will not support Firefogg in the future. The Upload Wizard will no longer work with Firefogg.
Tool Labs and Wikimedia Labs databases will be under maintenance on 15 February. This will start at 17:00 (UTC) and last for about six hours. Some tools could have problems during or after this.
Changes this week
The TwoColConflict extension is a new way to solve edit conflicts. It makes it easier to copy and paste the relevant text to the text field. It will come to Meta and German Wikipedia this week. It is already available on MediaWiki.org. It will come to more wikis later.

Future changes
Page Previews will be turned on for logged-out users on the Catalan, Greek, Russian, and Italian Wikipedias in the middle of February. Page Previews shows readers a short part of a linked article when they rest their mouse pointer on the link. This is to help them understand what it is about without leaving the article they are reading. Page Previews used to be called Hovercards. It will come to more wikis later this spring.

On 22 February the wikipedia.org portal did not work for an hour. This was because of a problem with a JavaScript file.

Recent changes
You can now search on English, French, Hebrew and Greek wikis and find words even if you forget the diacritics. It also works if you use diacritics in your search but the wiki doesn't.
When you use the mobile view and click on a link to an article in another language you will see that article in the mobile view. Previously it changed to the desktop view.
Problems
Some watchlist gadgets didn't work for a period of time last week. This has now been fixed.
Admins who click on "mass delete" on a user's Special:Contributions will be taken directly to a list pages created by that user. It has worked like this before, but not lately.
Changes this week
The way you switch between wikitext and the visual editors in the desktop view has changed. It is now a drop-down menu. This is the same as in the mobile view.
The "flag the edit in the abuse log" checkbox will be removed from the abuse filter interface. This is because the edits are always flagged in the abuse log.

Thanks for your message. As you may know, more than one person likely edits from any particular IP address, so it's possible my messages were directed at somebody else. As for whether they are idiotic, I absolutely disagree. We do not tolerate vandalism here at the Wikipedia, and users who vandalize articles will be requested to stop. I will never refrain from leaving such messages, as defending Wikipedia's content is worth the very minor offense you have experienced. Again, you may not be the target -- but that's how anonymous editing/reading works. If you don't want to see any more misdirected messages, yes, open an account. In this edit you changed {{WikiProject Panama}} to {{WikiProject Central America}} under the Panama task force, but the Panama task force has been migrated into a full WikiProject of its own so the task force parameters for {{WikiProject Central America}} are no longer supported. Changes this week
You will be able to show references from <references /> tags in more than one column on your wiki. This is the list of footnotes for the sources in the article. How many columns you see will depend on how big your screen is. On some wikis, some templates already do this. Templates that use <references /> tags will need to be updated, and then later the change can happen for all reference lists.

Recent changes
The Save page button now says Publish page or Publish changes on the Wikimedia wikis except for Wikipedias and Wikinewses. This change will come to Wikipedias later. The point is to make it more clear that the edit will change the page immediately. Publish page is when you save a new page and Publish changes when you edit an existing page.
You can see monthly page views when you click on Page information in the sidebar. Developers can also get monthly page views through the API.
The Linter extension is now on smaller Wikimedia wikis. It helps editors find some wikitext errors so they can be fixed. It will come to other Wikimedia wikis later. The extension will be able to find more errors later.
The MediaWiki-Vagrant portable development environment has been updated to use Debian Jessie. This means local development and testing will be more like on the majority of Wikimedia production servers.
Problems
On 15 March some interwiki links to other languages were not correctly sorted. This has been fixed. If you still see pages where the interwiki links are not sorted as they should be, they should be fixed automatically with time or you can edit the page and save it without changing anything. If this doesn't work, please report it.
Changes this week
When you edit with the visual editor, you will be able to switch the direction you write in from right-to-left to left-to-right as you are editing. This is especially important for editors who edit in languages that write from right to left. You can do this with a tool in the editing menu. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+X on PCs or Cmd+Shift+X on Macs.
