Glad that we came to an agreement. I don't know whether it is zapanuyem or zazhyvemo (in the pre-2003) version. The English wiki says zazhyvemo under pre-2003. Chernobyl disaster

I bet you thought I had forgotten! Wow, what a long article; but it's not even in the top 1000 Long pages, so it could be worse. Regardless of its length, it is a very well written article indeed and could be a strong FA candidate, I believe, with a few improvements. As you probably know, the references need to be increased in some sections, including Immediate Crisis Management and Causes. The Grass and forest fires sub-section has a group of embedded URLs that need to be changed to footnotes. It looks very difficult to trim the length, as it does not have anything that is not essential or at least very worthwhile, and because of this, the Effects of disaster section would probably have to be the main target, since it has a full article. I'm not sure how much could actually be removed from this section without leaving it incomplete, so it may even require restriction to a See also link. If that doesn't work, then the length will probably have to remain unchanged. As WP:SIZE says, length has to be judged on a case-by-case basis, because there are circumstances in which an article has to be very long. There are no rules about this, as such. My advice would be to put it through an FA candidate review and see if the length is among the issues raised. You may well be able to justify it. Adrian M. H. 18:37, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

The Chernobyl article is very compellingly written. I read it after watching a YouTube video, [Inside Chernobyl], of guys exploring the sarcophagus. The video and the article are clear enough to give nightmares. I adjusted the wording around the 40-second diesel generator startup. My edits were not vandalism, GHW Bush and Cheney were both Acting Presidents under Regan and GW Bush, respectively. These are not individual templates for separate terms, if you had actually read it properly and clicked the respectively links (it's why they're there) you would have found this out. Pleasantries aside, allow me to note that contrary to your assertion, I am not participating in the RfC on your behavior. My sole involvement has been as a short comment on an "outside view" offered by user Alaexis. As can be seen here that comment has nothing to do with the matter of the RfC in question, and instead deals with the issue of references. As for Dukhnovych's place in the Ukrainian historical heritage, please see the entry below:

Sure, on those occasions when English references are unavailable, I utilize an alternative source in other languages. I think that this is a commonsense policy. This, however, does not negate the fact that English language references are much superior and prefered to non-English references - at least for usage on en.wiki. This edit was a misunderstanding. "Rewrite the above version" meant only that I was rewriting the above version. It wasn't a command that you should rewrite. Many thanks for helping editing Valentyn Rechmedin. I will probably also write about his brother Leonid who also was a journalist, reporting from both Stalingrad and Berlin during the war, and later worked as a high rank bureaucrat in the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. I just need more references. Then I also plan to rewrite the article about Plyskiv (that now only focus on the Jewish settlement there, in fact now it looks like there were only Jewish living there even though about 2/3 were Ukrainians in the mid 1800s) and I will continue to add more pictures (besides my recent ones and old postcards I also have many unique German pictures from the 1940s). By the way Plyskiv is a містечко and not a village. How would you translate it? Township? Narking (talk) 22:03, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Glad to help. As long as the new articles get announced on the portal, someone can always help (dyk or otherwise). As far as Plyskiv. Township may be one, and I would say, an accurate version to translate Містечко, however it can be translated in many ways. Take a look at this article: Administrative_divisions_of_Ukraine#General_scheme_of_administrative_subdivision. As far as population, is 1500 people large enough for a settlement to be described as a Town or is it just a big Village? I don't know the answer, but you could try to make the argument that Plyskiv is a mistechko/town and let the reader judge based on the population number.--Riurik^(discuss) 00:20, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

No, public = anyone can see it, but says nothing about the licensing of an image. It's a nice picture, but I see that he has it as by-no$-copyleft, which makes it ineligible for us. If there is one licensed under "by" or "by-copyleft" then it would be o.k. Small numerical correction

Valline at al (including the Ukrainian coauthor from Kulchytsky's institute) is 2.6 mln. Kulchytski is 3.2 million (est) or 3 to 3.5 million to allow for the error margin. His best estimate is 3.2 and 3.5 is the upper one. --Irpen 07:56, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

No, I don't think you "heated up" enough in the first place for me to say "cool down". My purpose was to point out the fact that what is irritable is subjective. I agree that proper names should be used; the problem is establishing what these are. In the case of Kunis, the initial starting point of her being of Ukrainian heritage, therefore the patronimic must be -ivna, turned out to be incorrect after you did some research about her, and Kunis appears to be clueless about that part of the world. Hi, Riurik, sorry for delay in responce.. I see that the image that was uploaded by the user is now deleted due to lack of licence information. If you want to re-upload the other image from the Presidential website, just use it under the fairuse licence with a non-free image rationale, because the president.gov.ua site now says "All rights reserved." which does not make it under the {{PD-UA-exempt}} licence.

I am on spring break right now, so I'll have much more time available for wiki, I'll start cleaning up the image problems with PD-UA-exempt soon. PS, would you care to help out with a draft I started of the Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle? Cheers, —dima/talk/ 20:34, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Holodomor lead picture

Any better idea that the boy currently in? My concern is that, as most of those photos were proven to be, this may be the 1920s image from the Nansen commission as well. I would also prefer to not have grisly pictures at all, if possible, just to preserve the article's readership. Malevich's painting is a possibility, while it is too allegoric and this is just one of the several interpretations. But I don't have any better ideas now. --Irpen 03:07, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

It would be good to find a historical photograph from the time with more than one person in it for the lead. Malevich is good, but I don't think that should be the lead visual mostly because it is a painting. On the nature of grisly, we probably disagree. I don't see how an article on this subject can avoid grisly pictures, and I don't think that having such material will compromise readership on the subject. Having said that, these don't have to be the only pictures. For the lead, what about these: Image:Holodomor1.jpg (probably not) or Image:Holodomor - Harkivska oblast.jpg (a maybe). The second seems more appropriate, than the first. Aren't there other sources where we can dip for image documentation?--Riurik^(discuss) 04:17, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

On grisly pictures, I can't accept them sorry. I don't run Wikipedia, of course, and I have to abide with what would otherwise be a consensus, but I consistently opposed the grisly picture irrespective of the POV, be it the tortured Kosmodemyanskaya in her article, murdered Polish children or this article.

The second picture you propose is not expressive enough for the lead, it is simply generic. This child's eyes relay the feeling no less than the image of a dead person. Maybe Joe will be nice enough to comment on that without outbursts. He has access to many pictures. Currently, I have no formed opinion except the generic image is no good and the grisly image is out of question. We can leave it as is for now. Front ideas

Hello. I recently mused on the possibility of expanding our coverage of the late Soviet period in the various republics (at least the ones where something interesting was happening), and I notice Ukraine is rather poorly covered. History of Ukraine has only a couple of paragraphs on the topic, while the article on Rukh has just one. We have articles on the 1990 elections (not bad), the declaration of sovereignty, the declaration of independence (OK) and the independence referendum. However, we can do more with the 1987-91 period. I'm not proposing anything concrete (the area isn't a specialty of mine, but I can contribute something), just putting out some ideas. We should definitely expand on the articles we have, especially Rukh. Once that's done, we might consider having an article tying it all together - "Late Soviet Ukraine", "Independence of Ukraine", something like that. Anyway, let me know what you think. That's fine, as long as we get something underway eventually. And you're right - each country still has a lot of work to be done. Just recently I was looking at Roman Catholicism in Ukraine - big work to be done there, and while we have a pretty good article on Protestants in Ukraine, I don't believe we have anything on Mormons there, which we should, given that the first Mormon temple in Eastern Europe will soon open in Kiev. Anyway, Ukraine is lucky to have a group of dedicated editors and I'm confident there will be improvement: it's the more neglected countries (much of ex-Yugoslavia, for instance, or Moldova (which we Romanians try to handle as best we can)) one should feel sorry for. Self promotion?

Hi. Im curious as to what you meant when you deleted an external link I added to the Holodomor page, saying it was "self promotion". First, I don't work for Russia Today and can't even imagine why you would think so. Second, the link is in complete compliance with WP:NPOV and WP:External links. I was not trying to imply that you worked for any organization, but external links are quite often used for promotion purposes. Regardless, a plausible argument can be made that this specific linking is intended to promote RT, so in that sense it is imaginable.

Now about the issue, the link is not in compliance with wikipedia's NPOV policy, as it represents the view of that particular organization (see its youtube description page). Sorry, jumping in on this one, Riurik! Jwkozak91, I would rather not try, because it appears that we cannot use the {{UA-PD-exempt}} template for Ukrainian-government published images and lots of Copyright paranoia freaks are on there..
