Pray tell, what do you consider to be a WP:RS???

You removed an article (Luiza Savage) from the former Category: Harvard alumni and Category: Yale alumni due to lack of reliable sources, despite the fact that I ref'd the most widely circulated news magazine in Canada. Being a socialist means I don't put much faith in old-guard media, but I'd have thought the Canadian equivalent of Newsweek would suffice for Wikipedia purposes! All of this is moot now though, as your edit is now buried beneath several others, thus precluding a simple reversion.

Incorrect edits and deletions by bots will tend to discourage new, inexperienced and/or otherwise less-engaged Wikipedians like myself from contributing. This being the case, perhaps you would consider a 30 day buffer period before bot-editing articles. The worst part of this is that the target of your deletion was utterly uncontroversial, and didn't violate WP:BLP in letter or spirit. Frustrating!

One last thing: The only people on Earth with access to the Harvard alumni list (the lone source that's MORE reliable) are...Harvard alumni! I don't count myself among their number. If you do, feel free to provide refs! HuntClubJoe (talk) 19:09, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

A couple of points, in no particular order. Your reference to "incorrect edits and deletions by bots" is in error; this edit was not made by a bot, it was made by me. Your statement that I removed the categories "despite the fact that [you] ref'd the most widely circulated news magazine in Canada" is also in error; at the time I edited the article (and now, as far as I can tell), there was no citation to anything published by Maclean's describing Ms. Savage as either a Harvard or a Yale alum, much less both. Also, I wouldn't assume that WP:BLP is irrelevant; there might be some people somewhere in the World who would be offended by being associated with one of these institutions. I do consider Maclean's a reliable source, and if they have actually published something about this person's educational background, that would satisfy me. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 20:26, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

Hello, I noticed that you made an edit to the List of mayors of Glen Eira article on 9 April 2014, changing David Feldman to David Feldman (politician). Did you know...

...that "fixing" redirecting Wikilinks that are working properly is not recommended? See WP:NOTBROKEN:

There is usually nothing wrong with linking to redirects to articles. Some editors are tempted, upon finding a link to a redirect page, to bypass the redirect and point the link directly at the target page. While there are a limited number of cases where this is beneficial, there is otherwise no good reason to pipe links solely to avoid redirects. Doing so is generally an unhelpful, time-wasting exercise that can actually be detrimental. It is almost never helpful to replace redirect with redirect.

After the change, when one hovers, it reads "Santa Rosa Mall (disambiguation) ... Redirects to Santa Rosa Mall". This is a "For other malls with a similar name" link, and the change doesn't make sense on its face. :) —ATinySliver/^ATalkPage 19:45, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

AWB false positives?

Hi, I think AWB might be incorrectly marking categories that are not empty to be deleted. See this edit. Also, what could be happening instead is that someone creates the category, and then takes awhile to populate it, there were a few from last week that I had to revert because they weren't empty, and there was a note on the category's talk page that they were slowly populating the category. I can check, but I don't mark a category as empty unless it has been listed on Wikipedia:Database reports/Empty categories for at least 4 consecutive days. It's much more likely that someone is populating the category after they see it has been marked for deletion (and that doesn't bother me at all, since that's one of the reasons for the additional waiting period between marking and deletion). Or, possibly, the category is being populated by a template and the job queue delayed a template change from trickling down to the transcluding pages. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 12:03, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @Funandtrvl: Many people prefer to manually edit the articles through AWB, because it opens the page quicker than any browser opens. Sometimes when I made error, other one would ask "have you reported malfunctioning?", yes it is common reaction. Yet another list request.

This one should be particularly productive, I think. I would like a list of all instances where a page "Foo (bar)" contains a link to disambiguation page "Foo". For example, the page North and South (album) contains a link to the disambiguation page North and South, which should be piped through a redirect per WP:INTDABLINK. Once I finally got around to it, this turned out to be a very simple (and fast) script to write, thanks to JaGa's excellent database which already has all the needed info in it. Invalid redirect hatnotes again

I'm starting to see this issue creep up again. Can you generate a new list of redirect hatnotes for which the redirect does not exist? Or, better yet, can you create a project-space report and automate replenishment of it? This is obviously a problem that will crop up from time to time, so it would be great to have a regular report, these things being well nigh impossible to hunt down in the wild. I have noticed one particularly weird pattern with this new group. There are many entries like:

1. Buccaneer: Buccaneer is not a redirect to this page

Obviously Buccaneer isn't a redirect to anything, because it is the page itself. There are dozens of these, and I think that they can be fixed by a bot, rather than requiring human attention. bd2412 T 21:28, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

The bot task is probably dead, because the problem proved to be more complex than I originally anticipated. RussBot partial disambiguation

Hello. I have no idea how RussBot works, but I noticed this edit fixed one link to Spanish while leaving another untouched. Right, I would fully expect it to miss 'Portuguese' since it's not the same string as 'Spanish' – you sort of need a human brain to spot the similarity. What surprised me (and it's not a bug report or anything, just an expression of surprise) is that it caught one instance of 'Spanish' but missed another one. I imagine that is because there is some context it is looking for that only one of those instances satisfied. Again, it's not really an issue, just my idle curiosity. Recreating a page similar to the previously deleted page

Hello, I would like to add a page about JavaScript UI library Webix (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Webix&action=edit&redlink=1) one more time. I don't remember the reason for its deleting but I assume that there were not enough trust references.

Now Webix has become more popular among Internet users and I will provide more relative references in my article.

Just FYI, the former article was titled Webix JS, and was deleted under the Proposed Deletion process, which means that it may be recreated if it meets the applicable guidelines for new articles. Disambiguation links in proposed merge templates.

Is there a way that we can stop counting disambiguation links contained in {{merge to}} and {{merge from}} headers? See, e.g., Bromfield (surname). These aren't exactly disambiguation errors to be fixed, and although we should address them at some point, I think they need to be addressed as merge proposals rather than disambiguation links. A link to a city and state (such as Atlanta, Georgia) is not the same as separate links to the city and the state (such as Atlanta, Georgia)... I reverted two changes you made where I had separate links for city and state... In each, you made only one change while leaving several other similar instances, since that is the format I use for listing the hometowns of members on a team roster... No, it's not the same, and it's not intended to be the same. Separate links to city and state may be "the format [you] use", but it's not recommended per WP:SPECIFICLINK. Given the prevalence of "Atlanta, Georgia" as a phrase in the real world, reader expectation is that if they see both words are linked, they won't have to click on the left half of the phrase to get to the article they're looking for. --NE2 18:43, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

CSD question

You nominated a number of cats for deletion, e.g. Category:1885 in Australian cricket but they were not empty. Am I missing something? Sometimes I see this happen when the entry is simultaneously proposed for deletion, but that doesn't seem to be the case.--S Philbrick(Talk) 15:38, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

The categories were empty when I nominated them, but then they have to remain empty for 4 days before they can be deleted. That is so that if they get populated, as that one did, they can be retained. If you see that has happened, just remove the CSD template. @Timpo: I don't know what you are talking about. The last time my bot edited Gib (disambiguation) was in 2010, and it has never edited Gib (although I manually edited that page back in September 2010). It looks to me like Gib was a disambiguation page until yesterday (1 Sept 2014), when you edited it. You improperly copied and pasted content from Gib to Gib (disambiguation), and then rewrote the former page as an (unreferenced) article. All I did was change [[Gallus]] to [[Gallus (Frankfurt am Main)|Gallus]]. You can do that yourself by editing the page text. If you click on a link (like Gallus) and it doesn't take you to the correct article, you just find the correct article title and add it to the link, in front of a vertical bar | character. Will the list requests never end?

This should be a really easy one, though. Occasionally I run across redirects that still have other text - including article links - on the page. Tagging of categories for deletion (harpsichord and balalaika).

Hello Russ,

I noticed that you have tagged, for deletion, the full set of categories for the userboxes illustrating the proficiency levels of Wikipedians playing these two instruments.

I created some of these userboxes and their associated categories when I was reviewing this page a while ago.

At the time, I was adding userboxes (and their associated categories) for other instruments and I noticed that some instruments that were already there were missing what seemed to me to be the full set of resources, pretty much like the 'Frame drum' is incompletely defined right now (i.e. they were either missing some of the userboxes representing each competency level of playing a given instrument, and/or missing their associated categories).

So, I completed these partially defined sets in passing, since I was already there and doing this for the instruments I was interested in. (If you look at the history of my changes, you will easily see what I did at the time).

I thought that doing so would tidy up that particular article as well as serve the community at large, in readiness for future Wikipedians playing these instruments and wanting simply to find the complete set of resources already defined; that way, all they'd have to do is simply insert the appropriate userbox(es) in their user pages without having to define anything.

If I've done anything wrong and caused unnecessary work for you or anyone else, then I can only apologise. On the other hand, I thought I was doing something good and adding value to this aspect of our encyclopaedia; so, if I have gone about it in the wrong way, then please help me put this right, instead of simply deleting what's already in place and ready for future use. Thank you for your kind assistance in this matter.

I took these actions, at the time, simply because we, as Wikipedians, are authorized to include userboxes in our user pages to display our proficiency in playing musical instruments, and these userboxes can have categories to group all such Wikipedians in these different classes of proficiency. When I added the instruments I play, I noticed the article was incomplete and therefore took the initiative to improve it.

The current situation seems to be that there aren't, right now, any Wikipedians playing the balalaika or the harpsichord, but should we therefore delete these categories, instead of leaving them in place for future use, when they will be needed by such Wikipedians?

It is, of course, quite possible that I don't fully understand the guidelines governing how all these resources should be defined; so, thank you in anticipation for your patience with me, Russ.

• Patrick, these categories have been empty for quite a while. Generally, WP:CSD#C1 calls for deletion of categories that remain empty for more than four days. This is strictly for housekeeping, and the categories can be restored at any time if needed. In answer to your second question, there wasn't any limit, but I've put one in now, because making the bot run for more than 24 hours consecutively screws up the logging/reporting functions. Wikimedia categories

On Wikimedia, Category:Loboc Church redirects to Category:San Pedro Church Loboc. I think this should be the other way round, as Loboc Church is the page name on enwiki (recently renamed from San Pedro Church Loboc). Oh, you mean Commons. There are multiple wikis with "Wikimedia" in the title, so I just think of Commons as "Commons" and it didn't register. To link to something on a different wiki, you put a ":" and the wiki prefix before the title, like [[:commons:Category:Loboc Church]], which gives you commons:Category:Loboc Church.

And as to your original question, my bot just moves pages out of categories that have been redirected. I don't have anything to do with deciding which categories should be redirected. One of these days you are going to have to teach me how to make these lists on my own, so I'll stop bothering you about it. In the meantime, however...

1. Potential WP:PLURALPT pages. Lately I have been finding many instances where "Foobar" is a common noun at the primary topic title, but "Foobars", the natural plural form, is a disambiguation page. This is not always wrong, but often the clear primary topic of "Foobars" should be "Foobar". I would like a list of all pages for which we have a non-disambiguation article at a "Foobar" title of four letters or more, but we have a disambiguation page at the corresponding title of "Foobars" or "Foobares". Perhaps an easier way to frame it would be to list all disambiguation pages of at least five letters ending in an "s" or six letters ending in an "es" for which removing the "s" or "es" yields a primary topic title.
2. Disambig links to genre-identifying redirects. A good number of our disambiguation links are through redirects; usually these are come kind of spelling or capitalization variation, but many also occur to redirects where "Foo (song)", "Foo (album)", "Foo (film)", etc., redirects to "Foo". I would like a list of all disambiguation redirects with incoming links where the redirect contains (song), (film), (album), (TV series), or (video game).

Somme

Hello. Good job on redirecting the links to the Somme - don't know why all of a sudden the page had to be swapped with the dab page, but you may want to check them over again. You seem to have made a couple of wrong calls. When talking about the Somme in WWI terms, one usually refers to the area where it happened, the battlefield, more or less corresponding to the department, and not the river as such. Banknotes of Danzig category at Commons

Hi R'n'B- I uploaded images to the commons category Banknotes of Danzig and noted that these images were of pre Free City banknotes and therefore belonged in the category. They were moved by the bot regardless. If I undo this action is there a way to make sure it won't happen in the future (I have more pre-1919 Danzig notes to upload)? You would have to raise this on Commons, perhaps in their Commons:Categories for discussion process.
