I stumbled onto an WP:AN dealing with Hopiakuta, Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Wiki editor DonFphrnqTaub Persina and just wanted to congratulate you on the patience and kindness you showed, which was followed by a 'holy crap, i might actually know you!' reaction when I read your userpage :) If I believed in barnstars I would give you one for the dedication you displayed to helping this user and making the 'pedia a more open place for all. -Mask? 05:57, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

(moved from Vantucky's Talk)You'll have to forgive me for potentially being dense, but what exactly was the meaning of this edit? I reverted it because it looks an awful lot like vandalism, but imagine my surprise when... it's a edit from an admin!
Now, I am all for non-censorship, swearing until my fucking ears bleed, and yes, consenting naked dudes in the shower. But doesn't putting up a picture like that sort of give readers the wrong idea, especially when "promiscuity" is a really awful stereotype associated with homosexuality?
Now, given that there's a tag saying you're away, I'm a little worried you've been hacked. Please, explain to me what is going on here?!
L'Aquatique[talk] 07:27, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Everybody's friends again, and I don't want to stir the pot, but I have to say that your edit summary did tally with my feelings. At first, I thought the added image was vandalism. Then I checked out VanTucky and saw admin and thought someone had hacked his account, so I emailed him (as his page suggested). At any rate, L'A., I took your "oh please" to be in a lighthearted, Joan Rivers-ish vein, and immediately regretted spending all that time explaining why I was about to revert when you summed it up so concisely! (Incidentally, either VanTucky didn't read my lengthy explanation or he didn't agree: the people in the image are not "obviously homosexuals"). Rivertorch (talk) 18:12, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Hey, I hope this finds you well-
As you most likely already know, there has been ongoing discussion about the formatting issues surrounding the references sections in articles. Because the fonts are so small that they're borderline-illegible, it's making it difficult for folks to properly read them without some serious squinting action. Frankly, it's a headache in more ways than one. However, we have been told that the reason they are like that in the first place is because some articles (particularly the science ones) have massive amounts of references and if the font size wasn't so small, the pages would be ridiculously long.
So, I've been fiddling around with different solutions (see WP:VPP#Small fonts, and the idea that I've finally settled on is to use a bit of css code to place the references section in a scrollbox. I think it looks really great, and it doesn't have some of the problems I was dealing with when I was trying to use {{hidden}}. I'm especially happy that, unlike with {{hidden}} you can jump directly from an inline reference marker to that individual reference without having to do any extra scrolling. Or at least, that's the case when browsing wikipedia normally. I strongly believe that this will work with screen readers too, but I want to be sure before I go any farther.
What I'd appreciate if you did, if you have some extra time and don't mind being my guinea pig, is to go to my test page (User:L'Aquatique/Template Box) and click on the first inline citation you find, then let me know if it works properly. Just as fair warning, the test page is a copy of String theory- the first article I thought of when I went to go find something with lots of refs. However, you shouldn't have to wade through too mu physics gobbledegook to find a reference.
Thanks so much for your time, hopefully this won't take up too much of it. You can reply here or on my talk page, but if you do reply here please place the {{talkback}} on my talk page as I'm a bit of a space cadet and would probably forget to watch this page. You don't have to reply with mind-blowing super-hero speed like in the past, although you won't find me complaining if you do. *grin*. Thanks again and happy, uh, Wednesday...
L'Aquatique[talk] 22:27, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
I have no problems with it. I found footnote 7 randomly and pressed enter on it, and was taken to note 7 in the references section as expected. I tried it a few more times on other footnotes and it worked properly. The only thing is ... 31 refs really isn't that much. Israel has 244 refs and Manhattan has 212 - I'm trying to figure out why I've had to fix it twice. Does your idea still work if reflist is split into more than one column like {{reflist|2}}? I saw you were listed at WP:HAU, and that you indicated "images".
I'm looking for an experienced GIMP user. Or an experienced graphics designer willing to download and learn the GIMP (it's free, and its multi-layer file format makes collaborating on artwork easy).
Are you one?
The Transhumanist 00:53, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Here's what I've been working on and need help with...
It's one of 3 awards being developed for an upcoming collaboration/competition (July 15th). It's geography-related and international in scope and therefore a world-theme seemed appropriate.
I liked the globe in stand of the interlingual barnstar award, but the barnstar made the globe unusable:
File:Interlingual Barnstar.png
So I stripped out the globe and barnstar, to get this:
I needed a transparent background, and all that took was to add a transparent layer, then select and erase the original background so the transparent background is all that was left:
File:Globe stand with transparent background.png
I then found a picture of Earth in this screen capture from NASA's Worldwind program:
I carefully drew a thick red ring around the Earth, blacked out (painted black over) everything outside the red ring, then made the black transparent, followed by making the red transparent, leaving just the globe.
The GIMP supports layering, scaling, and positioning, which makes it easy to add components, so I added the blue marble to the globe stand to get this...
Then I took this:
And added an alpha layer (1st transparent layer) to it and then removed the white surrounding the globe (leaving just the transparent background), removed the black, changed the white to black, and touched it up by erasing bits here and there, and adding a couple lines. Then I pasted the whole thing into the above image as a new layer, positioned it over the Blue Marble and underneath the rim of the globe stand and reduced the layer's opacity by a little over half. I also isolated the shadow and moved it to its own layer (so it can be easily altered), and I enlarged the canvas to accomodate the addition of another element (see below).
File:Blue Marble Puzzle Globe in stand.png
If I used vector graphics for any of the above, I'm totally unaware of it.
Now it needs a passport, laying on the same surface that the stand is resting on, while retaining the shadow. The words on the passport need to be readable.
Here's a passport I designed with a little help:
It needs to be added as a layer to the GIMP xcf file, underneath the shadow. Then the scaling, perspecitive, and rotation tools need to be applied to shrink and position it so that it is laying flat underneath the globe stand, at an attractive angle.
This passport is kind of rough, and so we should probably make a new one from scratch (the problem is that this one is already at an angle which makes adjusting perspective difficult, and also the words might not be visible enough, and its right edge is a bit jagged).
Then the shadow will need to be adjusted to look right on top of the passport, and on whatever background is selected for the award. It'll be a multi-rank award, so I'm not sure yet what background or backgrounds will be used.
So that's it - once a passport has been added and the shadow is fixed, the image will be done.
Is this the type of image manipulation you are familiar with?
I'll need to get the .xcf file to you. Do you have an email address I can send it to?
I've been told Inkscape supports .xcf. Do you use Inkscape?
Or any other program that supports .xcf?

Hello yet again. I regretfully inform you that the bot we were using to update the user status at Wikipedia:Highly Active Users, SoxBot V, was blocked for its constant updating. With this bot out of operation, a patch is in the works. Until that patch is reviewed and accepted by the developers, some options have been presented to use as workarounds: 1) Qui monobook (not available in Internet Explorer); 2) User:Hersfold/StatusTemplate; 3) Manually updating User:StatusBot/Status/USERNAME; or 4) Not worry about it and wait for the patch to go through, which hopefully won't take long. If you have another method, you can use that, too. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Useight (talk) 17:36, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
It appears the globe stand was from a copyrighted image.
This means we're back to square one.
We need to either find another globe stand, or come up with a new idea altogether for the "Wikipedia World Traveler" award.
I look forward to any ideas you might have.

I would like to thank the community for placing their trust in me during my recent request for adminship, which passed 72 13 2 . Rest assured, I have read each comment thoroughly and will be addressing the various concerns raised as I step cautiously into my new role as janitor. In particular, I would like to thank Balloonman for putting so much time into reviewing my contributions and writing such a thoughtful nomination statement after knowing me for only a brief period of time (and for convincing me that I was ready to take up the mop now, rather than go through admin coaching).
To my fellow admins - please let me know right away if I ever take any mis-steps with my new tools. Should I make a mistake, and you reverse the action, I will not consider it to be wheel-warring (but please tell me so I can understand what I did wrong).
To everyone - please feel free to slap me around a bit if I ever lose sight of the core philosophy of Wikipedia as I understand it - the advancement of knowledge through the processes of mutual understanding and respect. As always, feel free to drop by my talk page if I can be of any assistance. =)
Sincerely,

Thanks for uploading Image:SP Chinpokomon.jpeg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.
For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 01:13, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

About the adoption thing. Will I still be able to edit? I won't be blocked or anything will I? I've read partially on the topic but not all of it. I'll read more to decide. I see your interested in Biology Maybe you can help me out benefits of lightning to plants, I'm trying to improve the article but I don't have resources. I don't know the time because it isn't displaye at the top but i'll get to that at my preferences. My timezone is (GMT-5:00)eastern time(Us and Canada). 01:02. Right now it is 3:40 A.M. I usually work on wikipedia whenever I get a chance because I don't have a computer at my house so I use whatever I can. So it could be weeks before I edit again. But usually I Work all day. Today I worked as soon as I got up. I plan to stay up longer than 6:00 maybe. Where I live is in mississippi but now I'm in North Carolina so its like 2:38 to me.
We share similar interests, I love Futurama. My two favorite characters are Bender and Zoyburg. I took a class of Biology I. South Park is the bomb. I also took a class on Desktop publishing. I love technology.
Some things you know I don't know but some things I know you probably don't know. That's where the fun is, Learning.
It really was a good idea for you to adopt me, thanks. Anything you may need help with?
P.S - I'll have to get used to the {{Talkback}} thing. --Condalence] 07:41, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
