Hi Alexius, thanks for having protected Quadratic equation. It looks like after a final warning for adding spam, and for 3RR, the same user has now taken a new IP-address and added the same link to Quadratic function. Pretty persistent. Perhaps a short block might help. See

- I think I'm going to hold off on blocks for now - the Quadratic equation article is 'safe' for a couple weeks, and although both IPs are pretty close to being blockable, neither has fully crossed that line yet; perhaps they'll stop for a bit. I'm confused as to why you protected this page. It was not being vandalized, nor was it in violation of WP:BLP. Jim1138 repeatedly reverted edits made by an IP claiming vandalism, though the actual infraction was WP:Copyright. The information the IP was adding is sourced, verifiable and reliable, the only problem was that he was doing a cut-and-paste of the source website. This protection seems unnecessary and I can't see how the reverts were attributed to vandalism if the rollbacker had read the citation. I'm going to go ahead and add the relevant facts and citations. I signed the recent straw poll/RfC in favor of pending changes with the reasoning that in some cases it would be great; but if it isn't available I'm going long-term semi over open-season. - The talk pages of those articles is the place to discuss the matter with other editors, arrive at a consensus, and decide what should be added or removed based on what reliable sources say. The articles will be unprotected in a couple of days - I'm not going to unprotect them now as the edit histories of those articles are ridiculous. Reverting each other 50 times is not the way to go. - The Reference desk/Mathematics would probably be the best place to answer this. (I majored in history and won my state's geography bee back in the day but I've never taken a physics class and when it comes to math I've forgotten so much that I currently have a 4th-grade level of knowledge.) - Generally user talk pages aren't protected unless the vandalism is really heavy (see Wikipedia:User pages#Protection of user pages for the exact wording). Your page history doesn't look too bad over the last few weeks, so I'm going to hold off on protecting it for now. If it's just one incident here or there, revert it and move on. If the situation is starting to get really annoying or disruptive, put in another request at WP:RFPP and an admin will probably protect it for a bit. AlexiusHoratius 20:16, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi - I left a note [Third_voyage_of_James_Cook|Third voyage of James Cook] (Talk) re the graphic depicting the route of HMS Resolution. It was later suggested that I leave the note on your Talk page. Hope that's reasonable. It's pasted as posted below.
The voyage map “Cook'sThirdVoyage58.png” attached to the page shows HMS Resolution going through Bass Strait. That is, the water south of mainland Australia and north of Tasmania. In fact, HMS Resolution travelled to the south of Tasmania; Bass Strait was not discovered until the 1800's, and we know HMS Resolution stopped at Adventure Bay on the south coast of Tasmania (see wikipedia [Adventure_Bay,_Tasmania|article]). In the case where information isn't verifiable, I've chucked them out. I've only put the ones that are verifiable, and explicitedly stated a broad group of eyewitnesses. According to you, eyewitness concensus (especially that of numbers above 20 people) amounts to no more than "gossip" and any specific negative reference to a person involved counts as "attack", and "what is wrong with you?". As humans we have every right to criticize professionals of any field, political, social, academic, or otherwise. Just because a comment is negative does not mean you can blatantly deem it "attack" and blatantly deem me mentally problematic. - Are you sure you have the right guy? I made three edits related to that article (, , and ) and I never labeled any edit as "gossip" or an "attack", and I certainly never called anyone mentally problematic. An editor said there was a content dispute on the article, I went to the article I saw there was indeed one, and I fully protected it for three days. Protecting an article isn't an endorsement of any one version and it shouldn't be read as agreeing or disagreeing with any argument or claim put forth by any of the editors involved in the dispute. Hey, man. I was wondering why some cities' pages have the state mentioned after them in the title (like Sioux Falls, South Dakota) and some don't (like Minneapolis). I was also wondering why Sioux Falls is referred to as "Sioux Falls, South Dakota", as there's really nothing else to confuse it with. Is there some certain population or something your city has to attain to be referred to by itself, or is it random?

- Originally every US city other than New York was "city, state", but there were a bunch of discussions a year or two ago on a number of pages for larger cities and it was decided that one or two dozen would drop the state as it wasn't really needed or in some cases common, so Los Angeles, California was moved to Los Angeles. This is why many larger cities don't use the state name unless there are additional ambiguity issues as with St. Louis the city and St. Louis the saint. The rough rule of thumb used was to go by the AP's styleguide, which listed a number of larger cities that didn't need the state as it was widely known. Although you're right that there are no ambiguity issues with Sioux Falls (as far as I know it's the only place of any kind with that name) it isn't mentioned on the AP list and the state isn't obvious and widely known as is the case with, say, Chicago. The ceasefire after all the arguing that went on about the moves was sort of balanced on the hope that the compromise would be the end of future requested moves; for this reason proposals to move most cities that aren't on the styleguide's list and aren't very large get shot down right away. - I've always thought the Grand Forks, North Dakota article is a good guide for what a medium-sized city should be. The writing is pretty good, it has a large number of sources and I like how the photos are all of decent quality (it's amazing how much better an article looks if the photos are small in number but of good quality). I see the SF article still has some of the photos from my bad old days of photography - although I will say I was happy with how the infobox turned out and the map is decent (but could be improved if I ever got around to it). The article still has a lot of issues - mainly with sourcing. I found it difficult to get many sources online, but if Grand Forks could find plenty of references Sioux Falls is at least doable in theory. AlexiusHoratius 03:46, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
- Perhaps you have some information on a topic I'm trying to research a little bit. Have you heard of South Dakota Highway 100? It's a planned loop around Sioux Falls similar to I-229 that is planned to stretch from the Tea exit on I-29 to the Timberline Avenue exit on I-90. There's next to nothing about it on the internet aside from a map or two, and there's no Wikipedia article about it (though it is mentioned in a few) because it's not yet complete. - I don't think I know much more than you - I've seen a few maps from the city and a couple mentions in articles but little beyond that. One article I saw made it sound like they haven't started yet but I could swear the construction around East 26th Street has to be part of it. Some of it is visible on Google Earth I think. I don't really know what the notability requirements are for highways - I'd imagine a few news articles about a planned highway would be enough but I'm not sure. - There hasn't been construction on East 26th Street for quite a while. However construction on the I-229 interchange with E. 10th and the closure of E. 57th between Highway 11 and Sycamore continue, and I know for a fact the latter has everything to do with SD 100. - It would probably be best to put an {{Edit semip-protected}} template on the talk page and make sure other editors agree with the addition. I'm not really good enough with templates to be comfortable adding new fields without messing up the template. Dear AlexiusHoratius.
Please forgive my erroneous edit of the Idaho article.
I am an elementary librarian and was merely teaching my 5th grade class a lesson about how anyone can edit wiki pages. We were discussing research, and are learning to evaluate websites and how to determine which information we can trust. I have edited the Idaho page before, as an example for class. I always revert the page back to the correct information, and I absolutely DO tell my kids that what I did was wrong and does constitute vandalism. The point I am trying to get across to them is that there is no internet police who checks all the information out in the web. I really wish you hadn't reverted the page so quickly because it is more effective for me to make the correction and apologize. (The class becomes very quiet and solemn when I tell them that what I did was wrong - believe me, they understand by my serious tone of voice.) I am certainly not bashing wikipedia in front of them. We do discuss that there is a place for wikipedia in our lives, and that there are people who use the internet to try to make the world a better place. But it is very important for me to make this point and every year this lesson has a huge impact on my students. Young students will retrieve wikipedia results in their searches and they need to understand WHY teachers do not allow them to use it as a source in school projects. I believe in explaining and demonstrating my research rules rather than just "because I said so".
I hope you understand my reasons for doing what I did.
I wish to keep on editing Idaho (or any other state), and I hope that I can continue to do so. I promise that I will correct any changes I make as I also want to make it clear that vandalizing a webpage is wrong. Indeed, if you look at Idaho from last year and the year before, you will see that I made the same changes and then reverted to the correct information.

- I appreciate you taking the time to explain the situation and I agree that Wikipedia is not a perfect source for information. It is indeed easy to vandalize (although in my opinion a larger problem is with neutrality on contentious issues). However, there are a couple of things I disagree with. First, any vandalism I see, or many other Wikipedia editors see, isn't going to be left in an article, even if the vandalism is being used as a teaching tool. The reason for this is that others use the site in addition to your class, and they deserve to see non-vandalized versions of articles. If your goal was to show kids how easy it is to change information in an article, this can be done without introducing incorrect information into an article, in this case Idaho being the 65th state. Second, do you see the problem with the statement "I wanted to warn kids that there was no-one else checking over my work, but you reverted my vandalism too quickly". As I said, I agree that Wikipedia has an issue with vandalism, but it isn't as bad as many think - much of the vandalism is either reverted automatically by a computer script or is reverted within a few seconds by someone such as myself. Some vandalism does stay, but a great deal of it is removed in a short period of time. I also revert vandalism because I and many others have spent a great deal of time and effort here, and appreciate vandalism as much as you would appreciate it if I showed your students how easy it was to rip pages out of library books. I've come to the realization that Wikipedia isn't infallible (and will probably never be) but it is useful in ways traditional books and encyclopedias can't match. As fond as I was of my old World Book Encyclopedia, my local libraries and my local bookmobiles, as valuable as they were, none of them would have been able to tell me much about what the ten largest US cities were in 1820, what the Union order of battle was at Gettysburg, or allow me to zoom into images of the Mitchell Map or original US Constitution. A quick note of thanks for your amazingly tireless patrol of the California Gold Rush article - which is very much appreciated! As you probably know, all California fourth-graders study "California History" during the year, and I can usually tell when many of these fourth-grade classes have reached the 1840s/50s by the spike in fourth-grade vandalism of this article. - You're welcome. I've never thought about correlating a historical timeline with the school year, but I actually think you may be on to something. To kick-off monthly meetups in the Twin Cities, two events will be held in Special Collections at Minneapolis Central Library this summer. These are mostly planned as opportunities for Wikipedians to discuss editing, but all are welcome!
Special Collections contains many valuable historical resources, including the Minneapolis Collection, consisting of files on hundreds of topics related to Minneapolis from neighborhoods to politicians (it's best to call or email in advance to request materials). Free wifi and several public computers are available.

I like the South Dakota Legislators database and it is very helpful. The Minnesota and Iowa Legislatures have databases for their legislators but I wish the Wisconsin Legislature would a database for their legislators but they don't. Thanks-RFD (talk) 15:50, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

Why did you full-protect that article rather than semi-protecting? The inherent problem is that drive-by IPs have been going there for a while to basically do on-the-spot reporting of store closures. None of those claims are sourced, it is just OR, and none of the closures appear to be so significant as to be worth mentioning. All those little additions to the captions saying "this store is now closed" are just ridiculous and have no place in an encyclopedia article. We aren't the Blockbuster Store Closure Report. Would you at least remove those nonsensical statements in the captions?--The Devil's Advocate tlk. cntrb. 03:01, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
- It's a content dispute. Adding or removing information in the caption as to whether the pictured store is open or closed isn't vandalism. Usually in cases like this I'll check the talk page to see if the issue has been discussed or any attempt at actual consensus has been made, and there hasn't been any discussion on there in some time. - I am said "persistent IP" & here we are talking about it. I'm reverting The Devil's Advocate's edits for a number of reasons. First, including information on whether a store is closed or not is vital to the caption when it specifies the location. If these captions were more generic - like 'a typical Blockbuster store in America' - then adding whether it is closed would be nonsensical. But because most store pictures right across Wikipedia highlight their exact locations, most articles I've come across also carry small lines on whether they are closed. It makes sense. Second, it's a quick way for a casual reader of the article to ascertain the overall health of the company if lots of pictures carry 'closed' captions. Of course once the company has completely liquidated, it would then make sense for somebody to remove all the closed store captions. Thirdly, The Devil's Advocate is only doing this to fight with me, while I'm attempting to protect the integrity of the article in question. This is evidenced from his/her first couple of reverts only on the North Carolina caption, then they moved on all captions when I reverted them a third time. Fourthly, what's the big deal about some little captions? I'm hardly asking the reader to wade through lots of useless information. Lastly, I'm sick to death of people like The Devil's Advocate vandalizing everyone's good work, acting like some grand Wiki Overlord, while people like me (who is attempting to add to articles, not take away) have things deleted because of people's pathetic power trips. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.131.47.146 (talk) 08:31, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

The Devil's Advocate, there are only a few situations in which reverting that many times is okay, and this isn't one of them. 144, although I haven't done an exhaustive investigation of the issue, some of your edit summaries do make your additions look like original research. Since you both don't seem to mind discussing the issue, I'd suggest using the article's talk page to come to some sort of agreement on it. Full protections can always be lifted early if an admin can be confident the edit warring won't resume. AlexiusHoratius 11:39, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
- I have policy and best practice on my side, but very little desire to explain it to some random person who has no understanding of either and an obvious chip on their shoulder. This isn't a valid content dispute. A bunch of IPs have been inserting lines about how some random store pictured is closed, simply because it is apparently true regardless of whether it is significant, sourced, or relevant, in violation of numerous content policies. I was clear about the material being in violation of content policies, yet you act like this is just some random content dispute. You know what, that guy above wins.
