Recent changes
In notifications, the icon for Notices has been changed from a speech-bubble icon () to a tray icon () for consistency. The Alerts icon has been redesigned too. The colors have been changed for accessibility.
Problems
If you use the wikEd gadget, changes you made were not kept when you switched from the wikitext editor to the visual editor while you were editing. This has now been fixed.
Changes this week
Wikimedia search will now ignore question marks at the end of the sentences or words you use when you search. Until now the question mark was just a wildcard.
On Commons, UploadWizard will now be available on mobile, rather than just the old upload form. This should reduce the workload for the community in reviewing images.
When you edit with the visual editor a puzzle symbol tells you there is an invisible template in the article. It will now mention the name of the template.
The button to read something in another language will move for mobile users. This will happen on 9 August.
When someone mentions you and links to your user page you get a notification. You will now get a notification when you mention yourself this way.
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 August. It will be on all wikis from 11 August (calendar).
A message on Notifications panel will invite users to try Special:Notifications page.

@IJBall: Yeah, I guess we'll just have to wait until August 12 to confirm it (though someone else has tried to add Ember's actress earlier – unsourced, of course). Hi @Nyuszika7H, I been aware of the four Tilda to create a signature for some while, since the get go, but there is some code in my browser that stops certain abusive JavaScript and that stops the four tilda working. Generally before I would double edit, to fix it, but it takes so much.
The way the code runs on WP is not conjusive to good security on the client, and I'm not removing the HTTP pipeline filter that protects me. This is four tilda working scope_creep 13:10, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
(edit conflict) @Scope creep: The expansion is done on server side, so I doubt that's causing an issue. Try going to your preferences, clearing out the "Signature:" box (or set it to "scope_creep" [without quotes] if you wish to have it lowercased), and make sure the "Treat the above as wiki markup" box is not checked. nyuszika7h (talk) 13:13, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

@Amaury: That's strange. I have episodes from three different sources (I don't have a legal way to watch most foreign shows here without waiting for syndication, and one source stopped and the other skipped some episodes, so...) The first two episodes are from iTunes, where he's credited as "Randall Thorne". Episode 9 is from Disney UK, where he's credited as "RT!". I just confirmed on Watch Disney, and there he's indeed credited as "RT!" in episode 1, 2 and 9. Someone would need to check in Canada, but unless we find that he's credited as "Randall Thorne" there, we should probably go by the original broadcast as usual and add hidden notes about this situation. nyuszika7h (talk) 17:28, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
I watched them when they aired on Disney Channel, which I'm sure gets their copies of the show directly from Canada, the original broadcaster, where I know for a fact it was RT! I was going to have you look on Putlocker, but it looks like they show Randall Thorne as well. I'm willing to bet that's why you only saw one episode as RT! @Amaury: It's really strange, because I'm pretty sure the iTunes episodes are from the US region too, so it's strange because they usually follow what Disney US does, with one-hour specials and stuff, but in this case they didn't. Problems
Last week Tech News announced you will get a notification when you mention yourself the same way as if someone else had mentioned you. This caused some problems and will happen later instead.
Creating and editing links to sections on other pages on the wiki now works again in the visual editor.
For some users, cross-wiki notifications haven't been working properly. The count has been wrong when only cross-wiki notifications were present. The cross-wiki bundle has been showing only the names of wikis and not the actual notifications. This will be fixed soon.
Changes this week
The login session when you choose "Keep me logged in" will now last a year. Previously it was 30 days. This will happen on August 16.
Some abuse filters will have to be updated during the week. This is because a bug will be fixed.
In compact language links, two new kinds of languages will be shown in the shorter language list: Languages that are used in the article's text, and languages where the article has a badge like "featured article" or "good article".
The visual editor will be available by default for logged-out editors on Wikipedias that use the Arabic script. It is already default for logged-in editors.
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from August 16. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from August 17. It will be on all wikis from August 18 (calendar).

Future changes
Starting the week of August 22 there will be three software deployment windows. They will be at 13:00, 18:00, and 23:00 UTC. This is to have more times when software of the wikis can be updated and make it easier for developers in different parts of the world.

For the record, you can "force" a table of contents with either __TOC__ or something like {{TOC left}}. But, as you said, it's generally not a good idea if there are less than four sections in an article. --IJBall (contribs • talk) 13:59, 18 August 2016 (UTC)

Recent changes
The ORES review tool is now available on Special:Contributions as a beta feature. It can make it easier to find contributions that are probably damaging the wikis. The ORES review tool is available on Wikidata and Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Dutch, Turkish and Russian Wikipedia.
The norm and ccnorm functions have been updated to make it easier to write abuse filters. This also affects the TitleBlacklist extension. You don't have to transform "I" and "L" to "1", "O" to "0" and "S" to "5" anymore.
The old pageview data in the "pagecounts-raw" and "pagecounts-all-sites" files is no longer being updated. You can find the new pageview data here. This happened on August 5.
Problems
Some big image files could not be thumbnailed. This has now been fixed.
When you moved a page over a redirect it would delete the redirect without saving it in the logs. This has now been fixed.

Future changes
Sometimes when you mention another user they don't get a notification. You will be able to get a notification when you successfully sent out a mention to someone or be told if they did not get a notification. This will be opt-in. You can test this on the test wiki.
How you add text after an edit conflict might work in a different way in the future. You can test the prototype.

Recent changes
Wikimedia mobile sites now don't load images if the user doesn't see them. This is to save mobile data and make the pages load faster.
When you edit a table with the visual editor, pressing Tab in the last cell of a row will take you to the first cell in the next row. Pressing Shift and Tab in the first cell of a row will take you to the last cell in the previous row.
Changes this week
The name of the "Save page" button will change. The button will say "Publish page" when you create a new page. It will say "Publish changes" when you change an existing page.

Recent changes
Word-level diffs now work in longer paragraphs.
Interactive maps now have a frame by default. This is to make them look like other multimedia objects. This affects all Wikivoyages, the Catalan, Hebrew, Macedonian Wikipedias and Meta.
When you preview the MediaWiki:Captcha-ip-whitelist page it will show a validation output of the listed IP addresses instead of the list of addresses only. This can help you to identify if your whitelist rules will work or not.

Thanks for uploading File:School of Rock (TV series) poster.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

OK, I did have the Edit toolbar enabled the whole time. But I would never have noticed the button for "Search & Replace" unless you had told me exactly where to find it! They really need to advertise that feature better! because before today, I used to copy text into MS Word to do 'Search & Replace' and then paste it back into Wikipedia edit windows – I really wish I'd know about this feature earlier!! <maplink> and <mapframe> can now use geodata from Open Street Map if Open Street Map has defined a region and given it an ID in Wikidata. You can use this to draw on the map and add information.

When you edit text and mention a new username they are notified if you add your signature. Before this only happened under certain conditions.
Users are notified if they are mentioned in a section where you add your own signature even if you edit more than one section. Before, users were not notified if you edited more than one section in one edit.
Problems
The MediaWiki version that was supposed to come to the wikis two weeks ago was put on hold again because of new problems. The MediaWiki version after it is now on all wikis.
Abandoned tools on Tool Labs could be taken over by other developers. There is a new discussion on Meta about this. It will be discussed until 12 October and then voted on.
Just want you to know that a few small changes will be implement to MOS:TV, based on the most recent rewrite discussion, in case you would like to voice any opinions regarding them before they are implemented. First, Nyuszika, thanks for the help above. Anyway, can you and IJBall, since he's had a lot of opinions on this subject, offer your feedback on this? Why do you suppose ratings for Disney Channel shows—or at least some as, without taking a glance at other shows, past or present, and refreshing my memory, I can't really say for sure—seem to always jump up and down, even for really popular shows like K.C. Undercover? For example, take a look at here. Using the last five episodes, we go from 1.18 for July 24, then up to 1.88 for August 7, then up to 1.97 for August 14, then down to 1.31 for September 11, and now down to 1.11 for September 18. Nickelodeon's ratings appear to be more consistent for the most part—again, I can't say for sure as I'd need to take a glance over its other shows, past or present, to refresh my memory. I attribute it mostly to a combination of a young audience (i.e. one that doesn't stick to a "schedule" like an adult audience would) and multiple viewing options (e.g. either watching an episode later off the DVR, or just watching later on Disney Channel as they rerun episodes a million times, or on Disney Channel online). --IJBall (contribs • talk) 13:42, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
@IJBall: Yeah, I can see the point. Nickelodeon is likely the same way, but it must be different somehow. And, semi-related, I think Disney XD is on a totally different table on what's considered "good" ratings as its shows hardly go above 1.00, other than perhaps premieres or specials, or even 0.50. Yeah, not sure what's the difference with Nickelodeon. One thing I've noticed is that instead of removing old episodes, Watch Disney started restricting them again to those with a TV provider login (they start off as restricted, then available to everyone for a while, then back), at least for Backstage. I don't think it's visible on the website, but the API lists a 2031 expiry date for those episodes. Before I revert you, please explain your recent edits to the Doctor Who articles. There was no consensus to the discontinuation of {{Doctor Who episode list}}, and the usage of number-letter (e.g. 217a) story numbers aren't supported by the BBC. Alex|The|Whovian? 14:08, 30 September 2016 (UTC)
@AlexTheWhovian: The closer determined the consensus at the TfD I linked was to merge, but there was nothing to merge because of the accessibility concerns with rowspan. Actually, yeah, it was about screen readers, they have a navigation mode where they announce column/row headers plus selected cells. In that mode, screen reader users couldn't be sure which episode of the story it is, as we use the story number as row header, which is not unique unless we add a suffix. (edit conflict) There was no clear consensus from the discussion after multiple months, and the closer was a non-admin who took it up himself after not having contributed to the discussion at all. If the same number is used, then they should span the same cell, instead of duplicate HTML IDs being created which in itself is bad accessibility - fixing something broken with something else broken isn't fixing it. This is why I once suggested scrapping story numbers all together and reverting to episode numbers. The template has also stood for over a year now without any further issues as well. Perhaps this should have been discussed in a new TfD that hasn't expired. Alex|The|Whovian? 14:16, 30 September 2016 (UTC)
(edit conflict) @AlexTheWhovian: If you wish to overturn the closure, my talk page is not the right place to do that. WP:NAC is just as valid as an admin close and both may be overturned if necessary. Also, "contributing to the discussion" would make them WP:INVOLVED. Personally I don't mind too much either way, I just saw it in the holding cell where nobody has done anything with it for almost a month year. TfDs don't "expire", the result was just waiting to be carried out and there was a lack of interest. However, now I see it may have been better to discuss how exactly to carry this out first (another TfD would be probably unnecessary, but at least a local talk page discussion). I just realized another thing, I may have broken anchors with this (though that could be easily fixed without changing the displayed output). And for what it's worth, on many animated shows' episode lists, a/b separation is "not supported" by the official numbering either, but it's a necessary disambiguation when directing and writing credits differ. nyuszika7h (talk) 14:19, 30 September 2016 (UTC)
Almost a month? It was held in July-October 2015; that's last year. That's almost a year, so it couldn't have been that damaging if no-one had been interested enough in carrying it out. As well as the possibility of breaking anchors, the templates should have been changed to {{Episode list/sublist|List of Doctor Who serials}}, rather than {{Episode list}}, so that the summaries don't display on the LoE page. You can revert my edits now if you want, I guess it would be better to discuss first how exactly to solve the issue. The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 4 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 5 October. It will be on all wikis from 6 October (calendar).

Future changes
Tidy will be replaced. Instead the HTML 5 parsing algorithm will be used to clean up bad HTML in wikitext. This would cause problems on a number of wikis. They need to be fixed first.
<slippymap> will not work on Wikivoyage after 24 October. You should use <mapframe> instead. If you need help to fix this before 24 October you should ask for it as soon as possible.
