Neapolitan Baroque is a form of art and architecture that developed in the 17th century and the first half of the 18th century in Naples. It is recognizable by its flamboyant decorations of marble and stucco. In particular, Neapolitan Baroque flourished in the middle of the 17th century with the works of several highly skilled local architects and ended in the middle of the following century, with the arrival of neoclassical architects.
In the 18th century, Baroque reached its peak with architecture influenced by rococo and Austrian Baroque, giving rise to a mix which gave birth to buildings of great artistic value.
This style, which developed in Campania and in the south of Lazio (where the abbey of Monte Cassino was built, an example of Neapolitan Baroque architecture outside of Naples) had not received international attention until the 20th century, through the book Neapolitan Baroque and Rococo Architecture by Anthony Blunt.
