The Reduction of Groningen refers to the siege and surrender of the city Groningen to the army of Prince Maurice of Orange and William Louis of Nassau-Dillenburg on July 22 1594. This marked the end of the Spanish rule in the city, which was made to join the Dutch Republic, merging with the Ommelanden to form the province of Groningen. The word reduction comes from the Latin (reductio) which means bringing back, indicating that Groningen was 'returned' to the Republic. The actual siege of Groningen lasted only two months, but it was preceded by a period of more than five years during which all entrances to the city were cut off one by one.
The reduction specifically refers to the transition to the new Protestant regime, followed by the expropriation of all property of the Catholics in the city.
