The result of the assembly was the creation of the current Constitution of Bolivia, placing it among the most significant events in modern Bolivian history. An amended version of the original draft was approved by Congress in 2008 and passed by popular referendum in 2009. It was promulgated by President Evo Morales on 7 February 2009, marking the transition of Bolivia from a republic to a plurinational state. The date 22 January is annually recognized as Plurinational State Day.
