Independent Olympic Athletes competed at the 2013 Asian Youth Games in Nanjing, China, from 16 to 24 August 2013. These were athletes from India, whose National Olympic Committee, Indian Olympic Association, was suspended by the International Olympic Committee for not adhering to its constitution and for electing tainted officials in December 2012. Sports Authority of India (SAI) sent a delegation of 89 athletes, including 27-member athletics squad of whom 18 were denied participation by the organisers because they did not satisfy the age criteria. Four weightlifters were also disqualified from the Games because of overage. Additionally, all the four badminton players were sent back from the tournament because the organisers received their entries after the deadline. This incompetent organisation of different Indian sports associations attracted media attention throughout the country and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports asked the SAI director general Jiji Thomson "to probe the case".
