EastEnders is a British soap opera, examining the domestic and professional lives of working class people who live in the fictitious London Borough of Walford in the East End of London. The show entered its 28th broadcast year on 1 January 2013 with its 4560th episode and finished on 31 December 2013 with its 4774th episode. Lorraine Newman executively produced the show until August 2013 when Dominic Treadwell-Collins replaced her. Newman's final credited episode aired on 5 December; Treadwell-Collins' first credited episode was broadcast the following week, on 9 December. EastEnders aired 212 episodes in 2013, with the the typical week comprising four half-hour episodes on BBC One, in a time slot of 7.30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 8.00 pm on Mondays and Fridays. Each episode is thirty minutes in length, with the exception of four one-hour episodes. A six-minute episode was broadcast as part of Red Nose Day 2013, focusing on the character of Liam Butcher (James Forde), who has joined a gang. Two special episodes were also aired on BBC Red Button: the first focusing on Dot Branning (June Brown) prior to her return to the show, and the second focusing on Bianca Butcher (Patsy Palmer) and Terry Spraggan's (Terry Alderton) time in Manchester.

Storylines during 2013 include: a love triangle between Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), Sharon Rickman (Letitia Dean) and Jack Branning (Scott Maslen), climaxing with Sharon and Jack's failed wedding; Liam Butcher's gang involvement; Lauren Branning's (Jacqueline Jossa) alcoholism and affair with married man Jake Stone (Jamie Lomas); the custody battle for Scarlett Moon (Amelie), which led to Michael Moon's (Steve John Shepherd) murder; Bianca Butcher and Terry Spraggan's relationship; Dexter Hartman's (Khali Best) kidney donation to his father, Sam James (Cornell S John); gangster Carl White's (Daniel Coonan) presence on the Square, which causes the disappearance of Shirley Carter (Linda Henry) and a feud with Max Branning (Jake Wood); Jean Slater (Gillian Wright) finding happiness with Ollie Walters (Tony O'Callaghan) and the start of a breast cancer story for Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson).
Characters that are introduced in 2013 included Dexter Hartman (Best), Sam James (John), Carl White (Coonan), Sadie Young (Kate Magowan), Jake Stone (Lomas), Terry Spraggan (Alderton), TJ Spraggan (George Sargeant), Rosie Spraggan (Jerzey Swingler), Nikki Spraggan (Rachel Wilde), Tina Carter (Luisa Bradshaw-White), Linda Carter (Kellie Bright), Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) and Johnny Carter (Sam Strike). Harry Rafferty, Rizwan Shebani, Chase Willoughby, Leanne Dunstan, Youssef Berouain, Tessa Wyatt, Tony O'Callaghan and Lisa Maxwell guest star throughout the year as Kane, Little Chris, Renzo, Ali, Tayo, Betty Spragg, Ollie Walters and Naomi, respectively. Returning cast in 2013 include Samantha Womack as Ronnie Mitchell, Barbara Windsor as Peggy Mitchell, who appeared regularly between 1994 and 2010, and Michael French as David Wicks. Characters that return in 2013 with new actors are Peter Beale, now played by Ben Hardy, and Cindy Williams, now played by Mimi Keene.
