Hong Kong has a variety of museums, covering a wide range of topics including science, the arts, culture and the development of Hong Kong. Most museums are established and managed by the Hong Kong Government, under departments including the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Environmental Protection Department. Museums established by businesses, education institutions and non-profit organisations also exist, showcasing their respective topics.
The first museum of Hong Kong was opened on 28 June 1869, in the Old City Hall. Main exhibits of the museum included books, images, and specimens of animals and plants. The museum was then demolished in 1947, after operating for 70 years. After its demolition, Hong Kong did not have any operating museums until the opening of the Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb Museum in 1957.
This list compiles all existing and former museums in Hong Kong, categorised by the type of exhibits displayed at the museums.
