Odenkirk's career in television began at Saturday Night Live, where he was a writer from 1987 to 1991.[1] His work at the sketch and variety show led him to receive his first accolade, the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, in 1989. He later won the same award in 1993 for his work on The Ben Stiller Show and received two further nominations in the category in 1998 and 1999 as a writer on Mr. Show with Bob and David. In 2003, Odenkirk made his directorial debut[2] in Melvin Goes to Dinner, and won in the Best Feature category at the Avignon Film Festival and Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival that year.
In 2009, Odenkirk made his acting breakthrough in Breaking Bad as Saul Goodman, a suspicious Albuquerque-based lawyer who represented lead roles Walter White and Jesse Pinkman and simultaneously became deeper involved in the crime world himself.[3] Upon the show's conclusion, he and his fellow cast members were recognized at the 20th Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2014 with the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Odenkirk's breakout success as Goodman led to the creation of a spinoff titled Better Call Saul that explains the nefarious trajectory of Goodman's character.[4] His performance as the spinoff's titular character received further critical acclaim.[5] In addition to receiving the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series in 2015 and 2016, he was nominated for the same award three additional times (2018, 2019, and 2021), and in the Best Actor category four times each at the Golden Globe Awards (2016, 2017, 2018, and 2021), Primetime Emmy Awards (2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019), and Screen Actors Guild Awards (2016, 2018, 2019, and 2021).
