Historical Interests: maritime history, Bristol history, exploration voyages of 15th-16th centuries. Generally: history of smuggling, trade, shipping, privateering. Also Irish economic development in 16th Century. Subsidiary interests in demographic, environmental and 'drink history' - particularly in relation to Bristol and its region. Director of the Cabot Project at the University of Bristol.
General interest in 'public engagement' — i.e. the ways in which historians improve their communication with the wider public. This includes electronic publication of sources, engaging with the press, exploring ways of conducting historical research in an 'open source' manner and contributing to Wikipedia in areas where I have expertise. I also serve as 'General Editor: Digitisation' for the Bristol Record Society and 'Digitisation Officer' for the Bristol Branch of the Historical Association.
