The official scope of the project is bacon related articles, but it is open to wide interpretation. Restaurants that serve bacon, imitation bacon alternatives, authors, books and notable writings that discuss bacon, bacon oriented artists and artworks, non-food related bacon uses and products, companies involved with bacon, and of course bacon foods are all welcome (it is unclear whether people and places named Bacon qualify, but this event is pretty Ignore All the Rules friendly, so we'll see what happens...).
The focus of this challenge is to create, expand, and improve bacon related material.
New articles and 5X expansions may be worked up in sandboxes with the DYK noms kept here until March 1, 2010. This allows the DYK nominations to be put up and the articles moved to the mainspace all at one time for a grand official bacon debut.
Articles may also be sent live for an immediate bacon rush. There will always be people ready to scoop up any bacon they come across, and when it comes to bacon, it can be hard to wait.
Images may be uploaded at anytime.
The Bacon WikiCup 2010, modeled on the Wikipedia WikiCup, is an addition for the 2010 Bacon Challenge to help get users involved in adding and expanding Bacon-related content (pictures, articles, DYKs, etc). The more a user contributes and reports, the more points will be earned. All participants will also earn a barnstar for their efforts.
Ah sure whatever. But on one condition: that LadyofShalott be asked to serve as an objective adviser. Without her, any project is doomed. Drmies (talk) 02:51, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
What the heck.:) I'll at least do some gnome-type work. I may or may not write an article myself. LadyofShalott 07:54, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
Yes! Write one! We want to see you write! Drmies (talk) 18:48, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
That list of domestic pig breeds with lots of redlinks looks kind of intriguing. I'm thinking I might try to dig up some info on some of them. LadyofShalott 20:29, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
Whoa--pork belly, lentils, fennel...you are strange! Drmies (talk) 21:22, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
This seems very strange to me, but what the heck.:) --ThaddeusB (talk) 20:15, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
Bacon Milkshake. Live the dream. Little grape (talk) 20:21, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
I love bacon and want to do a bit more content creation so this works out. I haven't had lunch yet today, so that might be influencing my decision to sign up, but whatever. -- Atama頭 20:28, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
I'd like to participate. Thanks for doing this! --4wajzkd02 (talk) 22:46, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
I'm quite familiar with North Carolina barbecue. It's a topic considered sacred in my home state; although, "sacred" can sometimes mean heresy and orgies. APKwhisper in my ear 09:01, 5 December 2009 (UTC)
Can I play too please? SpinningSpark 13:50, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
If you've got room for a vegan, I'd like to play. Which I guess is kind of perverse of me. Gonzonoir (talk) 22:53, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
not really perverse - you might want to take a look at Sky Attacker's Pig cruelty article below. SpinningSpark 17:34, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
Feel free to expand Vegetarian bacon. The article on pig fat as biofuel in Spark's userspace is also interesting. And there are geographical and biographical bacons. But mucking around on the meaty bits is okay too as long as you don't partake. Stay away from TheLeftorium's latest contributions though, they are pretty tempting. ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:21, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
Can I just sit on the sidelines, stuffing my face with pigs-in-blankets, and waving a little bacon-shaped flag? GiantSnowman 20:29, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
I'll be travelling by March y'see and will be away from Wikipedia for almost a year:( - however, if you want I can create some basic stubs on bacon-related professional soccer players such as Ron Bacon, Paul Bacon and Cyril Bacon, which you can expand on for DYK...GiantSnowman 20:35, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
Not sure if I can contribute. Shall watch from here... Paalappoo (talk) 13:06, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
This is beautiful, I wish I could contribute but my baconic knowledge is severely lacking DRosin (talk) 21:37, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
These are existing articles ripe for 5X expansion and ideas for new article subjects that may be notable. Please feel free to add to list!!!
Bacon related
Bacon Apps
Peameal bacon (currently a redirect to bacon) something from Canada . Kelapstick is being volunteered for this dangerous assignment.
Foods of Elvis Not sure on the title, but there are already articles on the "Elvis sandwich" (a.k.a. peanut butter and banana sandiwch with or without bacon), and the Fool's Gold Loaf (which definitely has bacon in it), and I believe there are a couple books and lots of articles on the subject. A bacon hook would be a slam dunk.
Bacon in popular culture (currently a redirect to bacon mania which isn't really the same thing) Everyone on Wikipedia loves "popular culture" articles and they're always embraced for their inherent encyclopedic quality!
I don't know what this is. But it looks important. "Norrköping Pork is a local specialty candy for Norrköping. It tastes the most vanilla and sugar, but it has an interesting texture." Shame it doesn't taste of bacon, can't have everything, I guess... Bd
Bacon is the New Black Some sort of consumer product line. May or may not be notable.
Slater's 50/50 Place that makes half bacon burgers. But I can't find any legit sources (the Examiner fails the spam filter...).
I found reviews on bacontoday.com and chowhound - now sure if either of those would pass muster (mustard?) though as RS. LadyofShalott 06:10, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
LightLife (Smart Bacon) Veggie meat division of Conagra awarded by PETA . They have an article; it looks ripe for expansion (and I've started collecting some resources to do so here. Gonzonoir (talk) 22:54, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
Newsom’s Aged Kentucky Country Hams
The Pork Shop
Scott Country Hams
Swiss Meat & Sausage Co.*May not be notable*
The Pig Next Door
User:LadyofShalott/Ossabaw Island Pig - just starting it, but will definitely have enough for a quite decent stub, and I hope enough for a DYK
Vegetarian bacon was created, but sent live prematurely. Why didn't anyone tell me how this is supposed to work??? ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:33, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
Congratulations to Cirt for achieving the Good Article status for this article, a historic milestone as the first Good Article in the history of the Bacon Challenge. AWESOME!!! ChildofMidnight (talk) 06:06, 9 January 2010 (UTC)
Aw shucks, thanks!;) Cirt (talk) 06:07, 9 January 2010 (UTC)
Nueske’s Applewood Smoked Meats Very notable and renowned bacon supplier in Wisconsin. "HOG HEAVEN BACON LOVERS AGREE: NUESKE'S FROM WISCONSIN IS THE BEST" and
... that a flitch of bacon was offered at Wychnor Hall to married couples if they could swear that they did not regret their union, but was so rarely claimed it was replaced with a wooden one? SpinningSpark 16:53, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
As much as your breakfast is valued, these should probably have some encyclopedic value and be used appropriately to illustrate articles...

Although these are kept in userspace they are open to editing by anyone and cooperation is encouraged, so don't be shy about helping out one another. Let's see if we can't get into some bacon content disputes! (Last year we got into a bit of a tiff over whether Elvis really ate peanut butter bacon and banana sandwiches, a debate that probably needs to be started up again. So feel free to weigh in on the article talk page!)
User:Spinningspark/Work in progress/Bio-blend Fuels (company that makes biofuels from pig fat). Does this mean you can eat breakfast while driving and let the fat drip into your fuel tank? SpinningSpark 13:53, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
User:Spinningspark/Work in progress/Flitch (bacon)SpinningSpark 19:57, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
User:Spinningspark/Work in progress/Sir Henry Bate Dudley. What has he got to do with bacon I hear you asking. You'll see, you'll see. SpinningSpark 16:46, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
User:Spinningspark/Work in progress/Danish Bacon (Seems to be quite notable . And they've been researching crunchiness . I'll adopt this one, I don't think notability is going to be an issue, they advertise quite heavily on UK telly. SpinningSpark 21:29, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

List of South Park DVDs#Season 2 - the DVD for Season 2 (disc 2 of the UK 2007 version at least) has several episode introductions with Trey Parker and Matt Stone offering recipes and cooking tips for bacon, having the blanket title "Bakin' Bacon with Macon"; Macon being a young pig, who was encouraged to eat the finished food.
Doughnut Drive 2009, in case anyone needs a break from all the bacon.
Razorback (film) - more on-screen bacon than any other movie known to man. If you can find a copy, the special feature titled "Jaws on Trotters" is worth a view for the concept alone.
Bacon quotes
"...instead of inhaling the scent of rancid popcorn, you'll be bathed in a sweet bacon wind." Elina Shatkin in the Los Angeles Times speaking of the benefits of bacon biodiesel.
"If you love a prospect, or bacon, you will certainly come hither." Horace Walpole
I think you put it live way too soon... if you had worked it up in your user space first, and moved it to article space on Bacon Day, it would have got mixed with the others and the PRODders would (maybe) have noticed a theme. --Redrose64 (talk) 18:00, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
Possibly. But the consensus for deletion was so strong, I don't know if that would have been enough to save it. I had fun writing it, even those who favored deletion said it was fun to read, and it inspired me to watch season 2 of The Simpsons on DVD over the weekend, so I don't have any regrets.
