This template is used to place the square brackets [[ onto the page. This is usually done to mitigate the conflict between template syntax and wikilink syntax; in other words, to put complex parser functions inside of the brackets of a wikilink. It is mirrored by {{))!}}, which will place the closing square brackets ]] and complete the wikilink.
