Isn't a tippler someone who drinks in moderation or something?

Continuous flying is certainly unnatural. There may be questions as to whether this sport is cruel. The birds fly willingly in a similar way to the way fighting bulls, fighting dogs and fighting cocks fight willingly. They are bread for endurance flights and cannot reproduce unless they fly very long.
- I've moved the above section here to the talk page so it can be discussed further to decide if it really should go with the Tippler Pigeon article? My opinion is that editors personal opinions on animal cruelty should not be showing up in encyclopedic references. We are not all vegetarians. I personally don't want to be constantly accused of being cruel to animals everytime I bite down on a hamburger. Wouldn't animal cruelty comments be better served appearing on pages actually designed to reference animal cruelty? Otherwise we wind up with people tagging every single article related to a breeder directed animal that has not been the result of natural selection. But even then mother nature can be far crueler. Also, I think "bread for endurance" should read bred for endurance? Anyhow, off the soapbox. Over to anyone who would like to comment further on this. Sting au 23:44, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
- I agree with Sting totally. I have been breeding and flying Tipplers for many years and have always treated them with much dignity and respect. The tipplers are surely selected for endurance flying but it is not like they are forced to fly long hours. The "good ones" do it voluntarily with some training. Selection based on some predefined criteria happens in all shapes of reproduction, even in natural environments by mother nature: survival of the fittest. Tippler 07:34, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
- G'day Tippler. Thanks for your support. I also keep the breed (among others) but I'm more into the exhibition side of the hobby. I think the editor that was wanting to include the section on cruelty into the main article had their own agenda for doing so? Tagging articles with OPOV comments should be discouraged. I find what happened to be a form of vandalism. Albeit a sophisticated form but still vandalism none the less. Anyhow, on a more positive note. Lots of work to be done on the various pigeon articles. I've started work on a few but they are still mostly at the stub stage in development. List of pigeon breeds I could do with some more photographs as they are lacking of even some of the more common popular breeds. There is a good supply over at Wikimedia under the Dove breed category. Here's a link http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Dove_breed If any pigeon photographers are reading this and can help then uploading any spare photos (your own) and in effect giving up the copyright to public domain (so I and others can legally use them) then that would be appreciated. There is a red link to where Jack was supposed to be in the "Types" section. It reads as [Handsword]. No such place right. It's either [Handsworth, West Midlands] or [Handsworth, South Yorkshire]. I have two photographs. One is of my grandfather and some one else unknown with a cup for "all England Tippler and Tumbler Pigeon Flying society Old Bird Championship Cup 1944" and one Showing the cup up close. - I am not a lawyer but if you do not know who took the pictures and they're from 1944 (approximately) I'd say you can probably safely claim ownership and therefore put them into the public domain. I'd say as a practical matter even if someone else took the pictures, how would they prove they took the photos (to assert copyrights) other than producing negatives? And even if they could prove ownership (and therefore copyright infringement) the damages would probably be tiny because how much value is there in two old family photos. If you're still concerned I would post something on the Village Pump area of Wikipedia and see if anyone can give you further guidance. --Onorio (talk) 12:45, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
Per the external linking guidelines, specifically guideline 13 under links normally to be avoided, should the links to the various tippler club websites be removed? I would also question the growing list of links to tippler clubs under guideline 3 of links to be considered where there is the specific guideline "Long lists of links are not acceptable." I'm considering removal on two grounds:
- This article is about the tippler breed of domesticated pigeons--not the various tippler clubs. That is, tippler clubs are indirectly related to the subject of the article.
- The list of clubs' links is getting pretty long.

This article is very focused on racing tippler pigeons. All the racing information is good and should certainly be part of the article, but it lacks general information on the bird. It would seem to me that every article involving an animal should have some kind of standard general information section discussing things such as the animals latin name, average size, main sources of food, where the animal lives, etc (I know that some of these things are in the article, but not all of them and they aren't very well organized). Specifically, I came to this page hoping to find out whether or not the tippler pigeon is migratory. I left disappointed. It seems like this is the type of thing an encyclopedia article would tell you about a bird. I think the page would benefit from more general information about the tippler pigeon beyond just the racing heritage and culture. I also think Wikipedia as a whole should have some sort of standardized section discussing general information for article on animals, but that is a different subject. Btw, I created a Wikipedia account to write this and it is the first time I've ever written anything on wikipedia, so sorry if I offended any of the etiquette or conventions of the site or posting in the discussion section. I have updated the Origins section to correct the Genus and species name and to make it more readable and in line with what is known about the origins of the Tippler breed.
