The German-language WP has a long article on Hofmannsthal. I'm translating & adapting some of that. As the article grows in length, it also seemed worthwhile to separate the biographical information from the discussion of his thought & philosophy. Herbivore (talk) 22:06, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

I realise that the views on English culture attributed to Hofmannsthal are probably from a quoted source, but where can he have read Nelson's poetry? Or, for that matter, an account of Milton's military exploits? Perhaps the notion was simply that English popular culture admires (allegedly) both military and literary celebrities equally and without any notion of hereditary aristocracy - lucky for Nelson he pursued his military career in a meritocratic service.93.96.231.233 (talk) 11:58, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
