Viruses are small infectious agents that can replicate only inside the living cells of an organism. Viruses infect all forms of life, including animals, plants, fungi, bacteria and archaea. They are found in almost every ecosystem on Earth and are the most abundant type of biological entity, with millions of different types, although only about 6,000 viruses have been described in detail. Some viruses cause disease in humans, and others are responsible for economically important diseases of livestock and crops.
Virus particles (known as virions) consist of genetic material, which can be either DNA or RNA, wrapped in a protein coat called the capsid; some viruses also have an outer lipid envelope. The capsid can take simple helical or icosahedral forms, or more complex structures. The average virus is about 1/100 the size of the average bacterium, and most are too small to be seen directly with an optical microscope.
The origins of viruses are unclear: some may have evolved from plasmids, others from bacteria. Viruses are sometimes considered to be a life form, because they carry genetic material, reproduce and evolve through natural selection. However they lack key characteristics (such as cell structure) that are generally considered necessary to count as life. Because they possess some but not all such qualities, viruses have been described as "organisms at the edge of life".
Selected disease
Rabies is a disease of humans and some other mammals, generally caused by the rabies virus, an RNA virus in the Rhabdoviridae family. A few cases have involved the closely related Australian bat lyssavirus. Rabies virus has a wide host range. Globally, dogs are the main source of human infections, with bats being important in the Americas; other naturally infected animals include monkeys, raccoons, foxes, skunks, cattle, horses, wolves, coyotes, cats, mongooses, bears, groundhogs, weasels and other carnivores. Transmission is commonly via saliva, usually but not always from bites; it can potentially occur via aerosols contacting mucous membranes. The typical human incubation period is 1–3 months. The neurotropic virus travels along neural pathways into the CNS and brain, where it causes meningoencephalitis. Nonspecific symptoms such as fever and headache are followed by neurological symptoms, including partial paralysis, confusion, agitation, paranoia, hallucinations and sometimes hydrophobia, which progress to delirium, coma and death. Around 17,400 people died from rabies in 2015, mainly in Asia and Africa.
Rabies is mentioned in the Codex of Eshnunna of around 1930 BC. The first vaccine was developed in 1885 by Louis Pasteur and Émile Roux. Prophylactic vaccination is used in people at high risk, pets and wild animals. Post-exposure prophylaxis, including vaccine and immunoglobulin, is completely effective if begun immediately after exposure, but survival is extremely rare once symptoms have begun.

The history of virology is usually considered to begin in the late 19th century, when the first evidence for the existence of viruses came from experiments using filters with pores small enough to retain bacteria. Dmitry Ivanovsky showed in 1892 that sap from a diseased tobacco plant remained infectious despite having been filtered; this agent, later known as tobacco mosaic virus, was the first virus to be demonstrated. In 1898, Friedrich Loeffler and Paul Frosch showed that foot-and-mouth, an animal disease, was caused by a filterable agent. That year, Martinus Beijerinck (pictured) called the filtered infectious substance a "virus" – often considered to mark the beginning of virology.
Bacteriophages, viruses that infect bacteria, were characterised by Frederick Twort and Félix d'Herelle in the early 20th century. In 1926, Thomas Milton Rivers defined viruses as obligate parasites. Viruses were demonstrated to be particles, rather than a fluid, by Wendell Meredith Stanley, and the invention of the electron microscope in 1931 allowed them to be visualised.
Selected outbreak
The 1918–20 influenza pandemic, the first of the two involving H1N1 influenza virus, was unusually deadly. It infected 500 million people across the entire globe, with a death toll of 50–100 million (3–5% of the world's population), making it one of the deadliest natural disasters of human history. It has also been implicated in the outbreak of encephalitis lethargica in the 1920s. Despite the nickname "Spanish flu", the pandemic's geographic origin is unknown.
Most influenza outbreaks disproportionately kill young, elderly or already weakened patients; in contrast this predominantly killed healthy young adults. Contemporary medical reports suggest that malnourishment, overcrowded medical facilities and poor hygiene promoted fatal bacterial pneumonia. Some research suggests that the virus might have killed through a cytokine storm, an overreaction of the body's immune system. This would mean the strong immune reactions of young adults resulted in a more severe disease than the weaker immune systems of children and older adults.

Selected virus
Canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV2) is a non-enveloped, single-stranded DNA virus in the Parvoviridae family. The icosahedral viral capsid is only 20–26 nm in diameter, making it one of the smallest viruses. The genome is about 5000 nucleotides long. The virus is very similar to feline panleukopenia virus, another parvovirus, as well as mink enteritis and raccoon and fox parvoviruses. It infects dogs, wolves, foxes and other canids, big cats and occasionally domestic cats, but cannot infect humans.
A relatively new disease, CPV2 infection was first recognised in 1978 and rapidly spread worldwide. The virus is stable and highly infectious, being transmitted by contact with faeces, infected soil or contaminated objects. After ingestion, the virus replicates in the lymphoid tissue in the throat, then spreads to the bloodstream to infect cells of the lymph nodes, intestinal crypts and bone marrow, damaging the intestinal lining. The more common intestinal form of disease causes vomiting and severe, often bloody diarrhoea. The cardiac form affects puppies under 8 weeks, causing respiratory or cardiovascular failure; mortality can reach 91% in untreated cases. No specific antiviral drug is available. Prevention is by vaccination.

Selected biography
Françoise Barré-Sinoussi (born 30 July 1947) is a French virologist, known for being one of the researchers who discovered HIV.
Barré-Sinoussi researched retroviruses in Luc Montagnier's group at the Institut Pasteur in Paris. In 1982, she and her co-workers started to analyse samples from people with a new disease, then referred to as "gay-related immune deficiency". They found a novel retrovirus in lymph node tissue, which they called "lymphadenopathy-associated virus". Their results were published simultaneously with those of Robert Gallo's group in the USA, who had independently discovered the virus under the name "human T-lymphotropic virus type III". The virus, renamed "human immunodeficiency virus", was later shown to cause AIDS. Barré-Sinoussi continued to research HIV until her retirement in 2015, studying how the virus is transmitted from mother to child, the immune response to HIV, and how a small proportion of infected individuals, termed "long-term nonprogressors", can limit HIV replication without treatment. In 2008, she was awarded the Nobel Prize, with Montagnier, for the discovery of HIV.

Selected intervention
Ribavirin is a nucleoside analogue that mimics the nucleoside guanosine. It shows some activity against a broad range of DNA and RNA viruses, but is less effective against dengue fever, yellow fever and other flaviviruses. The drug was first synthesised in the early 1970s by Joseph T. Witkowski and Roland K. Robins. Ribavirin's main current use is against hepatitis C, in combination with pegylated interferon, nucleotide analogues and protease inhibitors. It has been used in the past in an aerosol formulation against respiratory syncytial virus-related diseases in children. Ribavirin has been used in combination as part of an experimental treatment for rabies. It is also the only available treatment for the viruses causing some viral haemorrhagic fevers, including Lassa fever, Crimean–Congo haemorrhagic fever and hantavirus disease, but is ineffective against the filovirus diseases, Ebola and Marburg. Clinical use is limited by the drug building up in red blood cells to cause haemolytic anaemia.
