Licentiate of Theology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Licentiate in Theology or (in Britain) Licence in Theology (LTh or, in Australia, ThL) is a non-degree qualification in theology awarded in Canada and previously awarded in the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.
A similarly-named qualification in pontifical universities is the two-year postgraduate degree, the Licentiate of Sacred Theology (STL), which is equivalent to a Master of Theology degree. This follows the usage in many European countries, where the term "master level degree" is sometimes equated with a "license." This connection stems from its historical significance as a "license to incept," which originally denoted permission granted by a local bishop to pursue the degree of doctor. This permission was typically granted during the ceremonial event known as inception.
