DescriptionTarot-cary-collection-ita-sheet-3s-c1500..jpg |
English: This sheet (304 x 217 mm) shows all or part of twenty playing cards. Two of these are pip cards, the 7 and 8 (or 9) of Batons. These are actually from a separate sheet, cut and mounted to appear as part of this sheet. The other eighteen cards are Tarot trumps. The four missing trumps are the Hermit, Death, Judgment, and the World. Six trumps are entire, including the Bagatto/Magician, the Empress, a female Bishop (presumably in place of the Popess), the Emperor, the Star, and the Moon. The twelve fragmentary trumps include the Fool, the Pope, Love, the Chariot, Justice, Fortune, Fortitude, Temperance, the Devil, Fire/Tower, and the Sun.
The style of both pips and trump cards is closely related to the French style of Tarot decks known generically as Tarot de Marseille, but without their characteristic names and numbers. The Tarot de Marseille style originated in Milan, Italy, and this deck appears to be the earliest surviving example of that family of Tarot decks. It is part of the Cary Collection of playing cards, in the Beinecke Library at Yale. |
