DescriptionPrint Shop & Post Office - Williamsburg.jpg | Print Shop, Post Office, and Book Bindery, Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. This structure, also a reconstruction, is immediately to the west of the trio of shops shown in an earlier photo (M. Dubois grocery is at the right here). The lot behind this building drops significantly, and a lower level of the building is not visible here. Starting in 1736, in this location William Parks published the Virginia Gazette, the first newspaper in Virginia, and he became the "public printer" for the General Assembly; in addition, books and related items were sold here, reportedly displayed in the box-bay windows at the front. Between 1750 and 1780, other printers carried on the business Parks had commenced, but that apparently ended when the seat of government of the new state was relocated to Richmond in 1780.
