Miniature painting, portrait of an artist. Gouache heightened with gold on paper. The lightly bearded, barefoot painter sits with one leg crossed beneath the other painting a portrait, in Timurid dress but Safavid style painting of a standing figure. The painter wears a large white and gold turban, a pearl earring, a green shirt under an orange coat with large ornate blue and gold embroidered collar. The miniature is credited to Behzad with the date 89(4?) AH. Applied pink borders with gold flowering meandering vine and coloured rules, mounted on buff album leaf painted in gold with three Persianesque figures, goats and birds in a rocky landscape with trees and plants, outer double blue ruled margin. |
