Summary
DescriptionNotes issued by the Japanese Government during the occupation of Malaya, North Borneo, Sarawak and Brunei, used in Batu Lintang camp, Sarawak (1942–1945, obverse).jpg |
English: Currency notes introduced by the Japanese authorities during World War II. The denominations shown are 5 cents, 10 cents, 50 cents, 1 dollar and 10 dollars. It seems likely, but is not known for certain by the uploader (Jasper33), that this currency was introduced by the Japanese across all of Borneo after their invasion in 1941, and would have been in use until the Japanese surrenders across the territory in August and September 1945.
These particular notes were in the possession of a civilian couple interned at Batu Lintang camp, Kuching, Sarawak, Borneo, during World War II. The couple were resident in North Borneo before being transferred to Batu Lintang, and so may have first used the notes there; alternately they may have earned the money whilst in the camp. |
