Summary
DescriptionMap of Philipse Patent (showing the Oblong and Gore).png |
English: Map of the Philipse Patent, a land tract in lower New York State originally part of Dutchess County that became Putnam County in 1812. It also shows the Rombout Patent "Gore" (resolved in 1771) and Beekman Patent "Gore" (resolved in 1758), as well as a triangle of land south of Fish Kill Creek (proscribed by a diagonal dotted line) ceded by Putnam County to Dutchess upon its creation in 1812.
The map was made some time after 1878, as it 1) displays what it describes as "the supposed county line" established between Dutchess and Putnam Counties in 1812; 2) indicates and labels "Lake Gleneida" in Carmel (in the center of plot #6), which only received that name in 1852 but did not develop its distinctive heart shape (as portrayed) until dammed in 1870; 3) indicates and labels a "resevoir" west of Mt. Nimham (in the upper half of plot #5) - Boyd's Corner, built in 1872; and 4) indicates Middle Branch reservoir (in the NW corner of plot #9) built in 1878. |
