Deutsch: Die Hep-Hep-Krawalle von August 1819 [Würzburg oder Frankfurt]
Der Druck wurde in Nürnberg bei Friedrich Campe verlegt und wird in verschiedenen Versionen unterschiedlich entweder mit Würzburg oder Frankfurt untertitelt. Voltz war kein Augenzeuge der Ereignisse, stützte seine bildliche Darstellung offenbar auf damalige Berichte und hat offenbar einen fiktiven Schauplatz gezeichnet, denn die Gebäude lassen sich weder Frankfurt noch Würzburg eindeutig zuordnen. Das ganze Bild illustriert einen ungeheuren Gewaltexzess. Wohnungen werden geplündert und Stühle, Porzellan, Töpfe, Flaschen, anderer Hausrat, Schubladen, ein Laken und ein großer Spiegel auf die Straße geworfen. Der Zeichner legt nahe, dass auch Frauen an den Ausschreitungen beteiligt waren. Bei dem auf den Juden rechts einschlagenden Mann mit Weste und Frack könnte es sich laut Amos Elon vielleicht um einen Apotheker oder einen Schullehrer handeln.[40] Von links sieht man Kavallerie in die Stadt einziehen. Im Hintergrund sind einige jüdische Männer mit Dreispitz- und Zylinderhüten und Bärten zu erkennen, die von einem mit zweizinkigen Heugabeln, Holzknüppeln und auch einer Axt bewaffneten Mob angegriffen werden. Ein Mann schießt aus einem Fenster in die Menge. Die Wohnung, aus der er schießt, hat er zuvor offenbar mit einer Leiter erklommen. |
